In this new edition of Fast Delivery, we will first, precisely, devote a portion of our article to delivery services, their importance and their cost for restaurateurs. In the second part, we are going to become a TV columnist and introduce you to two new series on the world of restaurants that are or will soon be on the air.
So, let's start with a summary of a great and very interesting report published by the newspaper Le Devoir on delivery services such as the giants Uber Eats and Doordash.
Over the past few years, probably due to the pandemic that has brought these services into the spotlight, there have been numerous discussions about the fees charged by these two major delivery platforms.
Cap fees
The government even introduced a law that temporarily capped the fees collected by these companies at 20% until the end of the application of health measures. But since March 14, this law has been abandoned and it seems that it will not be back.
Normally, 30% commissions are charged to restaurateurs, who, in some cases, do not hesitate to pass on part of these costs directly to consumers. Thus, the bill for a meal delivered to your home has increased.
High visibility
These fees will cover the delivery service as such, of course, but also allow the restaurant owner to have his menu displayed on the Uber Eats or Doordash application, which attracts millions of consumers at the same time.
Ultimately, despite the devilishly high costs, the restaurant can no longer do without this showcase.
However, local apps do exist, making them great alternatives to the global giants. Abandoning Uber Eats and Doordash in favor of local businesses is probably the solution to lower prices!
TV shows
In another vein, telephiles and gourmands will be happy to learn that two new series, a first which is already available and a second which will be this fall.
First, let's talk about the documentary Help requested, the second season of which is currently online on TOU.TV Extra and hosted by Louis-François Marcotte. The star chef will again help four restaurants that are experiencing various difficulties, some having suffered the repercussions of the pandemic, others having difficulty achieving profitability.
There will be 10 episodes of 20 minutes each and the Imprévu 2.0 restaurants in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the Binerie Chik in Trois-Rivières, Si petit be-il in Bromont and Tacos Frida in Montreal will be the stars.
Finally, Le Restaurant will be a new culinary competition and will be presented in the fall on Zest. The focus will be on the kitchen, of course, but also on the management of an establishment, including the whole cost/benefit side and personnel management.
A total of twelve candidates will compete in order to win $50,000 and be able to open their own restaurant.
In each episode, everyone will have to take up the first challenge, the Creation Challenge, by offering a dish that meets the instructions given by Vincent Dion-Lavallé, the chef of La Cabane d'à Côté, in Mirabel.
After establishing the ranking of this first event, the last three will have to compete in a new challenge, the Grand service, where they will have to bring their dish to real customers. The candidate who least meets the expectations will be eliminated.
It is the actress Hélène Bourgeois Leclerc who will be the co-host of the show.
