The eat bugs or consumption of insects is yet a widespread practice throughout the world and many restaurants offer this unusual experience to curious customers. Tapas desserts through main dishes and cocktails, insects are versatile ... Would you dare?
Insects for everyone
There are over 1500 different species of edible insects for the sake of our taste buds. Of these, several are used in restoration including mealworms and crickets. Locusts and grasshoppers are also part of the insects we find regularly in the menus. But many other species can be primed with meal worms, scorpions, ants, beetles, bees, caterpillars and even butterflies!
The consumption of insects is not only good for the environment since production generates less greenhouse gas emissions than the meat industry, but insects also contain good nutritional qualities. The cricket, for example, has a high protein content and contains very little fat. Mealworms, meanwhile, are a good source of Omega 3 and Omega 6.
Where to eat?
Several restaurants across the globe now offer insects on their menu or even make their specialty. If you plan to travel in Asia, Central America and Africa, it will be easy to find a place to sample this particular kitchen since this practice is widespread.
You will visit France soon? There are several places where you can venture to eat bugs. This is the case of Aphrodite restaurant in Nice on the Côte d'Azur. Chief David Faure offers "Alternative food" menu that displays bold compounds of dishes "crispy crickets Buckwheat" or a dessert "Desert Rose To the Flour & Sugar sparkling". For the more adventurous, the Japanese Mushi restaurant, located in Paris, offers a completely exploded showcasing original insect card. Amongst others we may eat butterflies vapors, coco beads ants or a scorpion with almonds! The little critters are also invited in glasses with bold "religious Mint", a drink made of sake and this feature insect. It even offers the "Hara-kiri", a vodka cocktail, ginger and ... Black Widow!
In Quebec, it is possible to experiment with the Montreal Insectarium. Moreover, this summer every Thursday August 16 am to 20 pm on the terrace of the Botanical Garden, tapas based insects will be served!
