After a lovely summer day spent having fun with my two older kids (10 and 13), I floated the idea of wrapping things up at a restaurant. My daughter asked for her must-have: General Tao chicken. My son didn’t hesitate for a second: sushi! He’d eat it three times a day if I let him.
Miyagi Bistro Thaï & Sushi immediately came to mind. It was steps from where we were, and I knew it would please them both. I quickly booked a table online and off we went to the new Miyagi.
A décor worth discovering
I was excited to see the new décor I’d heard so much about. The restaurant, once located on the other side of 3rd Avenue in Limoilou, moved in the spring into a brand-new space. The result: a spectacular look! An urban, modern vibe with charming Asian touches — the lampshades, among other details, add a lovely note.
We arrived a little before our reservation time and were warmly welcomed. I had a small doubt: would I be well received on my own with two kids? No worries at all. The place is clearly designed for everyone. We were seated at a pretty round table with a banquette — the kids instantly loved the atmosphere.
Easy ordering, happy bellies
No need to overthink it: everyone already knew what they wanted. My teen went for the chef’s 16-piece combo: 10 maki, 2 nigiri, and one Miyagi pizza cut into four portions. My daughter changed her mind when she saw there was a General Tao poutine on the menu. Verdict: no regrets! And me? Why not a bit of both? I opted for the fusion plate, which brings together General Tao chicken, five assorted maki, and a half Miyagi pizza.
A feast as pretty as it is tasty
Service was quick, and our plates arrived with instant wow factor. They were gorgeous! Special shout-out to my son’s plate, topped with an edible flower. Thankfully, the flavor matched the presentation. We all loved the generously filled sushi, and as for the General Tao? One of the best I’ve had: crispy, flavorful, with a perfectly balanced sauce. My only regret? That my plate had only three pieces of chicken. But honestly, the portion was enough for my appetite — just the right amount to indulge without rolling out the door.
A peek at the Tiger Bar
Before leaving, we made a quick detour to the basement washrooms — and surprise! We caught a glimpse of the famous Tiger Bar, a hidden bar with a downright stunning design. A spot I’m keeping in mind for a future outing without the kids.
One thing’s certain: the next time my kids crave their favorite dishes, I’ll know exactly where to go. And if someone asks me for a place that will delight both little ones and grown-ups, Miyagi is now at the top of my list.
