Breakfast at Les Trois Garçons

When you go to rue Saint-Jean in Quebec, you have the feeling that you are taking a little trip. It is undoubtedly on this street that one hears the most English spoken in the capital. Besides walking it in summer when it becomes pedestrianized or even in winter during Carnival, I don't go there often. Let’s think again, I love the rue Saint-Jean, with its Porte Saint-Louis and its old buildings, but sometimes I have the false feeling of being a stranger in my own city.

Still, one fine Saturday morning, I went to Les Trois Garçons bistro for a late lunch. Admit, it's one of the cute sins of the weekend: taking time to have lunch!

Warm and fast welcome
When we arrived there, we were warmly welcomed, we had taken care to book. “We were waiting for you! The hostess says happily before settling into a bench. She tells us where to find the menus, now only digital due to the Covid. Quickly, we are brought coffee, asking if we have chosen. “No, we haven't opened the menu yet. I forgive this awkwardness and I consult the choices.

Classic breakfasts
The lunch menu fits on two pages, that's fine with me, the choice won't be too difficult. We are not really reinventing the wheel, the classic eggs-bacon-toast alongside casseroles, omelets, benedict, sweet breakfasts and a few healthy choices. It's simple ! Maybe I would have liked a little more originality. However, I find the small menu of hot or cold lunch cocktails very nice. But I resist the temptation. While I study the dishes, the waiter comes back to us twice rather than once to take our order. He's not rude, far from it, but I'm starting to feel a little rushed to choose. I finally opt for the ultimate decadence: the late riser poutine. My companion is going for the smoked salmon Benedictine.
Satisfying poutine
We don't have to wait very long for our food to arrive. I plunge the fork into my poutine, for which I swapped the mirror eggs for poached eggs. The hash browns are perfectly seasoned and crispy. The cooking is perfect. The marriage of cheese curds, sausages, artisanal bacon and Hollandaise sauce is sublime. It’s A1. I love that all the ingredients are cut into bite-size pieces, which keeps it stylish. It's flawless although I can't finish my plate. It was predictable. As for the Benedictine eggs with smoked salmon, my sidekick is in heaven. Everything suits him wonderfully. Hercule de Charlevoix cheese gives the dish a little kick. Only downside, arrived at the second egg, the dish is cold.

No sooner are we finished than our plates are removed and the bill arrives. I like fast service, but I also like taking the time to serve me. Perhaps I had the wrong impression that as soon as we were up, as soon as we were going to be replaced. But given the difficult times experienced by restaurateurs, that’s sorry!
