Overall Impression: Gibby’s is one of those places you’ve heard about forever, almost myth-like in reputation… long before you ever actually go. For me, it had been sitting in that category for years. With my brother visiting (a true steak connoisseur), it finally felt like the right time. I booked a table for five on OpenTable a few weeks in advance for a 7:45 seating… no issues at all. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt dialed in. We were seated right on time, service was immediate, and the evening flowed exactly the way you hope a place like Gibby’s will deliver. What I Liked: Service was a standout. Attentive, engaged, but never hovering or interrupting. Drinks came quickly, orders were taken efficiently, and everything arrived with great timing. A really nice touch to start the meal was the bread and pickles brought to the table. The bread was light, fluffy, and fresh with a great texture, and the pickles were a hit around the table… simple, but done right. Food-wise, we leaned into what Gibby’s is known for… steak. • The rib steak was exactly what you want it to be: cooked perfectly, rich, and deeply satisfying. • Wedge salad and Monte Carlo potatoes rounded things out well. • Across the table, rib eyes, filet, clam chowder, carpaccio—most dishes fully met expectations. Now… did I need a 20 oz rib steak? Absolutely not. Did I regret it? Only later that night, when my stomach started filing complaints. In the moment? Not a chance. Plate cleaned. No survivors. A fun highlight was the Spanish coffee service, rolled out tableside with a bit of fire and flair. A small touch, but one that adds to the overall experience. And oddly… even the bill stood out. Thick, high-quality paper. It sounds ridiculous, but it actually matched the overall feel of the place… attention to detail, even at the very end. That said, one miss worth noting, my wife’s peppercorn steak was significantly undercooked and came out rare instead of the medium she ordered, and she found it a bit tough. She didn’t say anything at the time (not in her nature), and I’m confident they would have corrected it quickly had we raised it. Still, at this price point, you expect it to land right the first time. Atmosphere & Vibe: We were seated in the basement dining room (one of three levels). I joked it might be the “ugly people section,” but in reality it was the opposite, just a great mix of people. Families, date nights, multi-generational celebrations, groups like ours… it felt lively but not overwhelming. You could actually have a conversation without shouting, which isn’t always a given in a busy steakhouse. The building itself adds a lot. Historic Old Montréal charm, heavy wood, warm lighting—it feels like a place with stories in the walls. Closing: Gibby’s delivers exactly what its reputation promises: a classic, high-quality steakhouse experience done right. It’s not cheap, but it’s not trying to be. This is a place for occasions. Celebrations. When you want to lean in a little and enjoy it. Would I go every week? No. Would I go again? Absolutely, when the moment calls for it. A couple small notes: • No mashed potatoes (surprisingly missed by a few at the table, especially for softer options) • Not exactly vegetarian-friendly… but that shouldn’t come as a shock At the end of the day, Gibby’s is about steak, tradition, and experience and it delivers on all three, even if not every plate lands perfectly.

Manager is very rude. Rats EVERYWHERE! they sat my grandmother next to the fireplace which had a dead family of mice inside of it and mice coming in and out the walls. I got food poisoning and had to go to the hospital the next day bloody diarrhea, diarrhea that lasted more than 3 days, fever over 102°F, frequent vomiting and didn’t even get offered a discount after our complaint! Place is loud u can barely hear the person across the table and the orange juice in my screwdriver (vodka and OJ) was sour. Horrible experience so embarrassing

This place never gets old. Well actually it gets older and older and thankfully doesn’t change. A true landmark in Montreal, and one of the best steakhouses with the most amazing old world decor anywhere in Canada. Stone and brick walls, fireplaces, low ceilings, complete warmth and coziness. The food never disappoints. Been coming here for nearly 40 years. I was fortunate to enjoy their new lunch menu, $55 for a 3 course meal with many options to choose from, 4 courses if you include the lemon sorbet pallet cleanser before the main course. Bread service and pickles are always included at no extra charge, as is the chocolate mints at the very end. Gibby’s simply has the best French onion soup anywhere. I was so excited when it came I forgot to take a picture, but trust me, beyond delicious, a must-have. The steak au poivre and rack of lamb are always great, and did not disappoint on this visit. Besides the food, service is always friendly and professional making the whole experience complete perfection. Come here for business day or night or pleasure, best date spot; you will not be disappointed. Ever.

Service was excellent. All our food was either over cooked, undercooked or tasteless. Needs variety on the menu. Too limited. And no birthday cake??? They could have told us when we booked. A lot of things have changed and not all for the better.

Went yesterday to celebrate our anniversary, the young lady that took us to our table was very nice and warm. Jason was our waiter and went above and beyond explaining the menu and checked on us constantly. For appetizers we had escargots and raw oysters (chuck norris from New Brunswick). The oysters were very fresh and delicious. As part of the table d’hote we also had Oyster Rockefeller - tasted very good as well. The Beef Wellington was amazing, I had the Pepper steak, which was seasoned perfectly; but, I recommend the Diane Steak that my daughter ordered. My son had Gibby’s Prime burger (medium rare) and according to him it was juicy and flavorful. The Monte Carlo potato as a side is delicious. We will definitely go back. The food is well worth it but Jason’s 5-star service made our dining experience a very memorable one.

We absolutely love Gibby’s. It’s been our go-to spot for every special occasion for years, and it never disappoints. From the moment you walk in, you feel genuinely welcomed. The atmosphere is warm and classic, and the service is consistently attentive without ever feeling overdone. The steak is always on point, perfectly cooked, high quality, and exactly what you expect every time. That consistency is what keeps us coming back. This place has become part of our traditions, and we’ll definitely continue going for years to come.

Had a wonderful evening here with my girlfriend. The blue cheese wedge salad was one of the best I’ve ever had and the beef Wellington was excellent. Our servers Vitali and Marie-eve were awesome. Would definitely come back.

been coming for years...was there just this past weekend March 21, 2026. quality has seriously dropped. the iceberg wedge salad...swimming in low grade blue cheese dressing, no blue cheese. the filet mignon, weak presentation drowning in sauce, so much sauce, what are you trying to cover up? the hatchet job on the meat? the asparagus. looked like last night's leftovers, limp. Monte Carlo potatoes, they used to be made with care and a were a beautiful sight, this time around they were unsightly, very unappetizing. Service was great. we will have to find a new venue for our birthday celebrations.

Gibby’s is our family’s go-to place for birthdays, and it has truly become a tradition for us over the years. At this point, coming here feels like a family heirloom, it’s the place where we celebrate our special moments together. The service is always impeccable, the steaks are consistently outstanding, and the overall experience is top-notch every single time. Everything about Gibby’s feels elevated and memorable. If I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would.

Doesn’t do well with special occasions. It was so sad because I can tell the hostess meant well but I had a reservation for 16 for my birthday. It was for 9:30 and upon arrival we were told that it would only be 10m. They ended up “seating us” at 10:15pm right when we had a second reservation at 11 (half our group ended up straight up refusing to have dinner at a place that made us wait so long) We ended up leaving without our supper because I wasn’t going to eat my birthday dinner fast and I have a rule of never rush drinking wine. That being said, the excuse given was that the “previous group just wouldn’t leave” which is a bummer because I had reserved days in advance for 9:30 and was there on time. I wasted an hour plus on my birthday but at least we had a back up.
