Cigarettes on the terraces: a majority of Quebecers support the ban

Cigarettes on the terraces: a majority of Quebecers support the ban

Should smoking be banned even on the terraces? The debate is raging in Quebec and on the Restoenligne Facebook Page since last week! The results of a recent survey commissioned by the Quebec Coalition for Tobacco Control suggests that yes, with 63% of Quebecers consistent with a future ban.

Recall that a study by an American specialist revealed a week ago that the air was mostly between 10 and 100 times more polluted by the smoke that the standard set by the World Health Organization. This rate is worse than in larger forest fires or in a smoggy day in an American metropolis.

So nearly two out of three Quebecers strongly believe that the government should go ahead and ban cigarettes on restaurants and bars terraces.

This popular support, combined with growing concerns about the dangers of secondhand smoke evidence, should be sufficient for the government to revise the Tobacco Act, according to the Coalition.

Moreover, the Coalition reminds us that in the months preceding the adoption of the new Tobacco Act in 2005, the same proportion of Quebecers supported the ban on smoking inside establishments.

The most recent survey was conducted on 7 and 8 August 1112 at Quebec by Leger Marketing.

Do you think the government will accept the popular demand?
