We visited this restaurant immediately after arriving in Montreal because so many people had recommended it. Unfortunately, our experience could not have been more disappointing. We were seated at the bar, and the staff member working behind the counter took our order. From the very beginning, the service felt cold and dismissive. There was little to no eye contact, explanations were rushed, and when I asked which menu items were the most popular, the response was simply “Number 2 and Number 4,” delivered in a way that made it seem as though answering the question was an inconvenience. As visitors to the city, we were hoping for a welcoming first dining experience, but instead we felt ignored and uncomfortable. At one point, we noticed that guests seated on both sides of us were served water shortly after being seated, while we never received any. This only added to our disappointment. Perhaps because the service left such a negative impression, but the food itself did not feel nearly as exceptional as we had expected given the restaurant’s reputation. It was decent, but certainly not memorable enough to make up for the lack of hospitality. Great restaurants are about more than just food—they are also about how guests are treated. Sadly, that was completely lacking during our visit. I still left a tip out of respect for the other staff members working that day, but looking back, I regret doing so. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this restaurant to friends or family, and I have no intention of returning.
What guests say about Schwartz's Deli
Schwartz's Deli is often described as a true Montreal institution, with very tender, flavorful smoked meat and generous portions. Many customers also like the fries, pickles, and poutine, as well as the fast and efficient service when everything goes well. On the downside, the place is often crowded and very cramped, and some people find the prices high or the service inconsistent, sometimes even brusque. It’s a good choice if you want the classic smoked meat experience in Montreal, but less ideal if you’re looking for calm or good value for money.

My manager told me to come try the sandwich, pickle, and a grape pop here. Well they didn't have the grape pop, so I just tried the smoke meat sandwich and pickle. To be honest there was nothing about the food here that stood out as better than other places I've eaten. I've had better food elsewhere. The atmosphere was a bit exciting. There were a lot of people in line for food. I don't know why other than people are sometimes like a frog living its whole life in a well not knowing there is a whole world out there of other things to see and try.
Definitely need to taste qhe you are in Montreal
The Usual Great Smoked Meat. Seating for five, cherry coke. Great Service.
Really enjoyed this on recommendation from our tour guide. We got the large smoked meat platter with a dill pickle. Got medium fat cuts. my wife and I were hungry and ate it all (mostly me). Had some leftover bread to bring home for snacking. Wonderful tasting meat!
They were so warm and genuine here. Can't wait to see the city again and come back.
It’s such an iconic spot in Montreal, and it was definitely worth the wait. We waited about 20 minutes, but I’m glad we did. The smoked meat was thick, flavorful, and very filling. This is definitely a must-try place when visiting Montreal🌟
This is a MUST go place! The service is amazing and what you NEED to order is the THE SMOKED MEAT SANDWICH. It is so good!!!! Simple yet delicious. The staff is very welcoming and the food comes really fast!
OMG they have the best smoked meat sandwiches I have ever had in my life.
A very nice place to visit to eat a proper meat sandwich with pickled cucumber
20/10 the hype on this place is crazy and I get why. Yesterday was my first time buying it and I got another one today The pickle with smoked meat medium fat is such a good combo! I think on my last day in MTL I have to go back and get another The take out line is shorter than the dine in option
Food: The medium-fat smoked meat was absolutely the reason to come here. It had that deep, salty, smoky flavor you want, with enough fat to keep it rich and tender without becoming overwhelming. That sandwich alone lives up to the hype and is easily the thing I would order again. The coleslaw and pickles are not throwaways either. They add the crunch, acidity, and freshness that the smoked meat really needs on the side. That said, not everything hit the same level. The turkey sandwich was a tremendous step down. It came across more like basic cold cuts than something memorable from a famous deli, and compared to the smoked meat, it felt flat. The bread on both sandwiches was also weaker than expected. It did the job structurally (kinda), but flavor-wise it was pretty plain and could use an upgrade. Service: Straightforward and efficient enough. This is more of a classic deli stop than a polished sit-down experience, so the food does most of the talking. Summary: Schwartz’s is still worth going to for the medium-fat smoked meat, coleslaw, and pickles. The main sandwich is excellent, but the turkey and bread keep it from being a full 5/5. Overall, a very good experience, just not perfect across the board.
Came for the meat sandwich. Stayed for the meat sandwich
The cashier is so impolite. We want to share one sandwich with 2 people but the cashier keep asking us to have 2. And she is not happy and act very rude when we insist with 1 sandwich.
The smoked meat is the best. It's the only reason to go.
Definitely coming back and very good poutine
The sandwich was just ok. I was kinda expecting more from all the hype, but I guess its like that when it's a tourist spot. I was lucky to be able to get in without waiting in a line. Ordered the Hot Smoked Meat, some Fries and a Soda. About 30 cad. The sandwich was about as big as a 6inch subway. So needless to say the cost was a bit much for what I got.
Got a #1 sandwich. With a pickle (~3 dollars extra). Right under $20. I was in the take out line, was pretty quick. Took a whole 5 seconds to get my order so sandwich was definitely premade. Take out line is a different spot than the sit down portion of the restaurant. Line is long! Be prepared to wait. Service was not great, workers barely spoke to me, seemed like they just wanted the line to keep going. Restaurant did not seem very clean. Sandwich was very lukewarm. Dry. Salty, no rich flavor at all. Definitely felt like a tourist trap. Don't recommend.
If you want New York City dining in Montreal, this place is it! It was a staple in my childhood, and every chance I get to go, I take it. Thank you for continuing the legacy 🫶
We ordered delivery. The food was just as good but a lot smaller.
The smoked meat sandwich lived up to the hype, and the cole slaw was also very good for not having the usual mayonnaise in it. Line up was huge, so we got take out and ate in the take out area. This was a much faster way to get your sandwich.
Theres a line, but its an organized, moving line, we waited about 10 min in line. There was a line for restaurant and another line for take-out. We were seated at the bar. Food was great, most of the staff was friendly and great, except for our bar server. He was grumpy, extremely short with us and slammed our plates on the counter. Besides that I dont have any other complaints. Sandwhich, pickle and fries were good, bread was soft and good.
If there is a big line up, just order from the takeout counter next door and they have stools, counters and tables in the back. Best smoked meat you will ever have. Truly.
Came by myself which was great easy to sit if not you are waiting on a line for a while, service was good smoked meat was amazing flavor was outstanding, salad and pickles were also great also bought mustard togo and the montreal spice
It’s the experience!!! I won’t comment on the service, we sat at the counter.. if you know, you know lolllll
