Best Smoked meat sandwich hands down! Staff are friendly and fun! I be back for sure!
Reviews / Ratings for Schwartz's Deli
Delicious and a staple of Montreal smoked meat. Fries are soft and greasy: just how I like ‘em.
Really friendly waiter. I went at 3pm on a Monday in January and got a table for two immediately.
Best smoked meat ever, hands down! Absolutely delicious! The wait can be very long and the restaurant is a bit cramped but it’s worth it. The prices are very reasonable too. I would highly recommend the smoked meat poutine and the smoked meat sandwich.
It's definitely worth a try, but be prepared to queue. The staff are really friendly
Smoke meat is way too dry and I ordered medium. Fries are chalky and dry too. Poutine doesn't have enough sauce or cheese for the amount of fries. Coleslaw is good, but nothing special, the same coleslaw you get at "La Belle Province" on all dressed hot dogs. Meh place to be honest.
Great spot
Always worth the stop whenever we visit Montreal. Get the smoked meat sandwich + pickle
I do not understand the hype. Was recommend-this place from a friend. I was served a to go. Burrito wrapped sandwich... Cold rude staff. "Asked what's you best recommendation.."points to #1". It was so dry every bite I felt like I would vomit. And my Uber driver said the same. $36 for a burrito and poutine. Not impressed
At Schwartz’s Deli, I had an absolutely delicious smoked meat sandwich prepared by Stefan. It was truly outstanding. On my next visit to Montreal, this will definitely be a place I will come back to without hesitation.
Great sandwich and fries. Walk-ins only, but worth the wait.
So delicious and always such a special experience visiting this iconic deli which is second to none!
Sandwich was awesome. Waitress was as good as it gets.
Unfortunately, the guy that took our order was miserable! Seems like he hates his job. Won’t be back.
Schwartz’s Smoked Meat is very famous and popular, and it’s something you really should try at its original location in Montreal. We also tried the steak and liver—both were incredibly delicious. The restaurant is old but full of authentic charm, and you don’t mind eating in a place where so many famous people have dined. Highly recommended—don’t leave Montreal without trying their iconic smoked meat sandwich! 😋🥪
The meat is perfect, the poutine was delicious and although we were hesitant - get the cherry coke! This cherry coke hit the spot with our meal. Note: you share tables with others but it is a nice and casual atmosphere, so completely worth it!
Mmmmmmm and the pickle!!!
Very busy place. Long line— I felt that the service was lacking though, no smiles from whoever served us. Very cold. No refill of water, or even checking up on us. (Which was surprising as we were sat on the bar) The food was good but from the service and also how they were aggressive with tips, I do not recommend unfortunately. (We also saw the lady kept asking others for more and more tips… so unpleasant)
Definitely worth the wait even though the line up seems like forever when you are super hungry… the meat sandwich was so tasty and very friendly staffs.
I really wanted to try the smoked meat sandwich here so that is what I have ordered. The bread was soft but thin and to be honest the smoke meat was not so tasteful that I need to add ketchup to enhance the taste but meat was really very juicy and generous portion. Sandwich size is just enough for one person. However, I was expecting to taste a special and unique flavor of the meat but again good thing it’s really juicy and almost melts in your mouth. The fries has crispy burnt taste. The price is like around 30$ per person if you will have fries and a drink with it. The ambiance is like 80’s or 90’s era and I like it. The staffs are pleasant and they serve fast. Overall, good to try for tourist as it has its history.
The food is good, pretty decent. However, staff were really rude especially to my mom. When we walked in the place we kept on being pushed off the door (where we were told to stand) rudely by the manager. When we sat at the counter, we were practically neglected for the first 10 minutes, the staff (dude, asian as well) explained the menu in detail to the other customers at the counter but not us. We had to get his attention multiple times just to order. The staff bitterly and in a low voice asked our order and if we want lean, medium, or medium fat meat. My mom is not fluent in English, so she misheard it as the meal sizing (small, medium, large). He intentionally exhaled loudly at us and just repeated it rudely without explaining (which is his job). I ordered a cherry soda and the staff placed it in front of my mom. She held the can attempting to move it to me, but the staff immediately snatched it out of her hand for no reason. He placed it in front of my brother and when he was about to pass the can to me, the staff did the same thing. We were utterly disappointed and offended with the service treatment so we decided to not tip. The cashier forcefully shoved the tipping jar towards my mom, and she had to flee from being harassed. All in all, the food is not THAT good to get mistreated. Definitely NOT tourist & foreigner friendly, will not recommend to my friends and anyone who’s visiting Montreal.
Ordered on doordash, we considered going in person but after reading all of these reviews about disrespectful, condecending, and demanding service I am truly glad that we stayed in. The Sandwich à la viande fumèe was small but delicious, I haven’t had pastrami in a long time as I usually follow a pescatarian diet but it was so worth it! A perfect ratio of fat to meat, genuinely could not have been better except to perhaps have wider slices of bread to not need to stack the meat so high on small slices (makes it difficult to take a bite). However, the poutine is the first terrible poutine I’ve ever had in Montreal, the fries were soggy which is to be expected and is understandable when ordering fries for delivery and the cheese curds were pretty decent, but the issue was that they were incredibly burnt and just tasted like char or straight liquid smoke. Don’t get me wrong, I love a smokey flavor, I charcoal grill nearly every chance I get in all seasons rain or shine, but these were not just smokey fries they were actually burnt to the point that we just picked out the cheese curds and couldn’t stomach the fries at all.. My suggestion is order from a food delivery app like doordash, ABSOLUTELY get the smoked meat sandwich, and avoid the poutine at all costs.
You should not go in with high expectations of the place. Your are looking for that nice flavorful bite of the smoked meat that they are famous for. Enjoy and leave. Do not think of hygiene and expect a line up. Do not eat the fries! This was the take away store not the main restaurant!
The smoked meat tasted incredible, but I wish they had a gluten free sandwich option.
