First time in Montreal, was told this was a must and was not disappointed, the food, atmosphere and service was great and I felt very welcomed!
Reviews / Ratings for Schwartz's Deli
The food here is just so good. If you appreciate a good sandwich, Schwartz’s is a must.
For the price it's meh. Meat was a little dry. One sandwich is expensive
Delicious food
Great smoked meat sandwich. Never lets you down!
smoked beef sandwich & pickles is the best
My favorite place to eat poutine and montreal smoked beef sandwich. Even poutine has MTL smoked beef chunks in it
You will be hard pressed to find better food and staff anywhere else. Rockstars in the food service business.
We passed by a few times hoping the line up down the block would die.. it didn't. The key is to go to the take- out side rather than actual restaurant, there's a handful of tables in the back and the same quality of food, perhaps a smaller selection. The montreal smoked meat sandwich was delicious but pricey, I thought $15 for a sandwich with no side was a bit steep. I'd still recommend.
If you’re in Montreal, Schwartz’s Deli is an absolute must-visit. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The smoked meat sandwich is simply unbelievable—perfectly seasoned, piled high, and packed with incredible flavor in every bite. You can instantly tell why this place is so famous. The atmosphere is classic Montreal deli style, busy and full of energy, which just adds to the whole experience. The service was quick and the food came out exactly how you’d hope.
It was OK - not sure if it was worth the visit though... Honest opinion, I don't find the smoked meat in here worth the money. It's overpriced for the portion AND the taste. Frankly I didn't find anything so special about it... and the sandwich is hard to eat. Meat is way to big compared to the bread, inevitable to eat with a mess. I came to satisfy my curiosity, but probably won't visit again...
Not at it’s used to be. The smoked meat has lost its flavour. It’s dry and not worth it at all. They only surfing on their name now…shame for this iconic Montreal eatery!
Definitely a must-visit spot when you’re in Montreal! Be prepared for a bit of a wait if you get there during a rush, but the food comes out fast and they’re pretty good at packing in the customers to keep things moving quickly. The smoked meat is awesome, and the sandwiches come packed with it!
A place full of tradition. An unique experience in this almost 100 years restaurant.
The sandwich, the myth, the legendary... Schwartz's! Never disappoints. Smoked meat is life!
Always a classic stop in Montreal for one of the best sandwiches!
One of the best in town serving smoked meat, turkey and salami. Extra mustard on the table if you wish. Fries aren't bad. Pick your own pickle.
Very famous. Happy I have tried it but too much meat to my own taste. Huge portions.
Best smoke meat in town, you normally wait 30 minutes if you go in busy hour, only if you are more than 2, parking on the street only
Old school authentic deli Got the #4 sandwich, pickle and loaded fries.
This is worth every bit of the hype. Ahnds down the best smoke meat sandwich I have ever tasted.
honestly worth the hype
As a New Yorker, I’ll always go out of my way for a great pastrami sandwich. There are only a handful of places left where the craft of properly smoking, curing, and brining pastrami still feels authentic—and fortunately, Schwartz’s is one of them. If it’s your first visit, don’t expect a traditional sit-down restaurant experience. There’s no table service and the ambiance is just a step above fast food. You order your sandwich, fries, or other proteins at the counter, grab coleslaw, pickles, and drinks from the refrigerators behind you, and then pay at a register that’s somewhat awkwardly positioned near the door—opposite the dining area. The seating is simple: essentially a counter and a few plastic tables. What it lacks in hospitality and décor, it more than makes up for in flavor. I ordered a classic pastrami sandwich with coleslaw and a pickle. After paying, my sandwich was handed to me in a brown paper bag. The portion was refreshingly human-sized—not one of those absurdly oversized American stacks. The meat was excellent: tender, well-seasoned, with beautifully spiced exterior bits and a thoughtful mix of lean and fatty cuts. The coleslaw was bright and pleasantly vinegary—I nearly finished the entire container. The pickle came wrapped in cellophane (a bit off-putting at first), but once unwrapped it delivered exactly what you want: a satisfying crunch and a well-balanced brine. This isn’t a place to linger. I was in and out in under 30 minutes, which feels about right for the setting. All in all, I’m very glad I went. Next time I’m in Montreal, I might skip the no-frills dining room experience and just have it delivered to my hotel—but I won’t skip the pastrami
The food was delicious and the service was fast, the restaurant has a real family feel. This place is always packed and has long family-style tables, so you will likely be sitting with strangers. And people will DEFINITELY touch you as they walk by, due to the crowded nature of the place. I would definitely recommend this place for their food and their efficient (bilingual) service, but if you have sensory issues/hate crowds it might not be the place for you.
Couldn’t chew the Meat. Need a steak knife to cut smoked meat: something wrong happened. Like if it stayed 12 hours on the counter. Please avoid. Im sorry. I wish i could write anything good. We just lost 55$. Try in order: Ben’s or Lesters’ or Dunn’s or Snowden’ even P’tit Québec. I will still buy mustard and spices at the pick up stand and hope for the other customers that it was just a mistake.
