Schwartz's Deli is often described as a true Montreal institution, with very tender, flavorful smoked meat and generous portions. Many customers also like the fries, pickles, and poutine, as well as the fast and efficient service when everything goes well. On the downside, the place is often crowded and very cramped, and some people find the prices high or the service inconsistent, sometimes even brusque. It’s a good choice if you want the classic smoked meat experience in Montreal, but less ideal if you’re looking for calm or good value for money.
This place packs out. Very rare that there isn't a line out the door so beware. Food was good good though and line did move relatively quickly.
It's a staple to go here and just enjoy a sandwich in the park either mid day or as soon as they open to cure that hangover!

I have been going to this deli since I came to Canada. I started when the sandwich was just &4.75. When they started the steak, it was cooked on charcoal and it lost its taste (and size) when they switched to gas. I love the taste of their smoked meat and it always brings me back.

It was cool but I don’t think the hype is that real. Service was great. Katz has the edge
This so called institution had it’s day. It’s not as it was or used to be. Average smoked meat very salty overdone. Fries used to be hand cut fresh now it’s frozen supermarket quality.pickles were crisp and tasty 16.95 for a skinny sandwich come on.
The meat was excellent and well-worth the wait. But this is a terribly racist establishment. If you are a POC, I’d suggest choosing another place or order take out if you must try it. Such a shame because all the other people I met in Montreal are all really nice and kind. This is Canada, and it’s not okay.

Schwartz’s is a place you must go to when in Montreal! It’s absolutely worth the wait to get in. Very cool atmosphere and the most incredible smoked meat sandwich. It was our second time here and we will be back in the future!!
Schwartz is worth the visit. The food was absolutely delicious, the cost our meal and some meat to go was over $100 with a tip. With the cost of beef in 2026 I'm not going to complain about the cost of our meal because it was worth every penny. We chose to go early before the lunch rush and sit at the counter instead of a table. The fellas working there were a riot. The banter between them all was worth the price of the meal alone. They told us some fun facts we did not know about the place and one of the guys had worked there on and off for 27 years and how he now only works one day a week as he works as an Electrician during the week (and a male stripper by night as claimed by his coworkers) I see a few complaints about the atmosphere, we really enjoyed it and I'm someone that cannot stand busy, tight spaces. I feel like the old and outdated space is part of the charm of a place that is almost 100 years old.
I am so disappointed by Schwarts......it's not what it used to be at all....Smoke meat was sliced thick.it was not medium like I asked...My wife refuses to go there.....I should listen to her.....everytime I go back, I keep being disappointed......I am not going back again.....no more Schwartz for me.......

Best smoked meat sandwich in Canada! Everytime I come to Montreal I make sure to have time to visit! Delicious food, awesome staff and I love the decor! Highly recommend!

Old school cafeteria selling smoked meats. Quick and easy with a familiar taste. The sandwich is quite filling!
Line was long onto the street for a sit-down table but moved very fast! Service was quick. I got the classic - smoked meat sandwich and black cherry soda. 10/10 worth a try!
