The bread is very soft, and the layers of beef are well seasoned, tender, and rich with a nice fatty aroma. Personally, I think it tastes even better with a bit more yellow mustard. The fat distribution could be more even — some parts were a little dry and firm, while others were quite fatty. Highly recommend having it with pickles, which really balance the richness of the beef.
Reviews / Ratings for Schwartz's Deli
I love the food here and especially the pickles... I bought a few jars to take home about a year go and just cracked into third, but to my surprise, they were completely spoiled :( The expiration was for 2027, and my pantry is temp controlled so I don't know what went wrong with them. I would suggest the owner contact the manufacturer, as someone could eat one and get botulism.
Solid experience, would highly recommend.
At first, the old building might look a little unusual from the outside, but once you step in and later walk out, you realize how charming that vintage look and those worn yet lively details truly are. The place has a unique soul and energy that slowly grows on you. As a chef who deeply values food quality and digestive health, I was genuinely impressed when fermented pickles and sauerkraut were served as side dishes. This thoughtful choice showed a real understanding of how food can support the body—paying attention not just to flavor, but also to beneficial bacteria and digestion. The food itself was outstanding. Each dish felt better than the last—from their signature sandwich to the steak, and even the beef liver, all cooked with care and confidence. In short, the people behind this restaurant truly understand the art and science of cooking. They don’t simply serve food; they create balanced meals, thoughtfully pairing sides and main courses in a way that even helps your stomach feel good after the meal.
As ussual everytime I visit Montreal I passed by Schwartz. I got a sandwich combo medium fat. With fries, pickles and cherry peppers. Nothing's change in he consistency of their sandwich. Its expensive for the food. I paid $30 for the combo... but I guess its ok. It has been an iconic place in Montreal. Worth the price though
Montreal canon.
I always enjoy stopping by when I’m in town to stock up on meat to take home. The service is consistently friendly and efficient, Smoked meat sandwich is always a go to for me. However, on my recent 2-lb order, the cuts seemed noticeably fattier than the 2 lbs I purchased a couple of years ago, which was a bit discouraging given how much prices have increased.
A Montreal classic
Delicious food, friendly service. Had to check it out and so glad we did. This place is a vibe and we loved it!
I came here to eat smoked meat on the recommendation of my local friends. Luckily, I didn't have to wait in line at all. It really is as they say.
Classic downtown deli great smoked meat!
Very dirty and very disgusting and very rude service
The Smoked Meat was as good as they say
The food is Amazing. The only downside is parking and the long lines to order.
I give them 5 star an love the smoked meat. Just an advice is that do not go for their stakes, The last time I made this mistake and ordered it, the cook was med rare as ordered but the surface of the stake was burnt to bitterness. It also had many chewy parts which that I had to throw them out or swallow. I will definitely go back but I wii always stick to the smoked meat that they are know for not the stake.
Had the smoked meat with fries and a pickle. The smoked meat is always outstanding! Perfectly cooked, juicy, and consistently excellent. The pickle has great flavor and pairs perfectly with the meal. Schwartz’s never disappoints. Highly recommended.
Even better than the one in New York! Absolutely loved it. 👌🏻😍
Delicious meat that just melts in your mouth for $18.34
Mediocre and overpriced food with poor service, but an extremely rude and aggressive cashier without any social graces who demands money and tips from you. I told my friends who are local to Montreal about this and they said it’s common, which is why they avoid this place. This place is definitely a tourist trap. They also charge you $3 extra for sharing food (see the attached picture)… There are better smoke meat options like Pete’s that you should choose over Schwartz’s.
Amazing roast meat, and don’t let them fool you—their poutine is seriously undersold and ended up being the best thing on the menu. This place is just as good as they say it is. I’d definitely come back
This is my wife’s favorite spot, We traveled a lot and still this place is worth to visit. • Impression: This is my second time visiting Schwartz’s Deli, and the experience confirmed why it holds its iconic status in Montreal. • Dishes: I ordered brisket sandwiches with sauerkraut — each plate delivered precise taste and memorable texture. • Service & Atmosphere: Warm, efficient hospitality and the lively deli setting elevated the degustation. • Verdict: Any dish that leaves this kitchen is worth trying, and I highly recommend it to everyone who truly appreciates authentic cuisine.
