Reviews / Ratings for Schwartz's Deli
Excellent
I recently visited Schwartz’s Deli and left genuinely disappointed. The total came to over $70 for three sandwiches and a side of fries, which was already shocking—but unfortunately, the experience didn’t justify the price at all. The sandwiches were surprisingly small, especially considering the reputation and cost. Even more disappointing, the meat was quite dry and lacked the juicy, flavorful quality you would expect from a place known for smoked meat. There was barely any mustard—just a thin smear—which made the sandwich feel even more underwhelming. As for the fries, they were overly greasy and heavy, making them difficult to enjoy. It felt like very little attention was paid to quality or consistency. The overall condition of the restaurant also left a lot to be desired. The space felt run down and not particularly clean, which only added to the negative experience. Given how iconic this place is supposed to be, I expected much better upkeep and atmosphere. All in all, this visit was disappointing from both a food and value perspective. There are many other great places in Montreal where you can get better quality, better portions, and a more enjoyable experience for your money. I would honestly recommend choosing another spot instead.
A montreal institution for almost a hundred years. You should at least do Schwartz's at least once when you visit small seating area. But it's a hundred year old building, always get the dark cherry cola.
Doesn't look like much but that's a lot of sandwich to put away. Fantastic nonetheless, so tender and juicy and the pickle was fantastic as well. Must stop if you're in Montreal. It's a bit of a wait but worth it. Or you can get take out quicker and enjoy in the park, weather permitting...which it wasn't for us.
First off busy busy spot, line up out the door… but when we did get it we both ordered the famous smoked meat Sammy. I liked it a lot. My son did too, but he prefers Rueben’s… I’m at a loss myself because this was packed full of flavor and almost roast beefy like… I really enjoyed it. We are making our way to all the best smoke meat Sammy places this time around
Really great service, fast too. Got great discussion with the staff too!! Easy to understand why it has a great reputation
Very busy
Amazing place
Small, authentic, and a must for first timers.
Visited Schwartz’s Deli and tried the smoked meat sandwich absolutely worth it. The meat was super juicy, tender, and full of flavor. You can really taste why this place is so famous.
The food is okay nothing special and the place smells dirty
Waited 40min for takeout. I aint gonna lie it was at most mid. Sure the sandwich was good and the meat was super tender but for the price... its not that worth it. Honestly maybe because im not a tourist but I guess every tourist should try this. Its just not really worth the time and money. Although I can say the fries were really good.
It is a messy and dirty place, and their famous sandwich was pretty average.
I love putting their meat in my mouth.
It really gives New York a run for its money!
According to my friends who live here, if you ask to any local where is the best poutine they will tell you any place but here…. because they focus more on the quality of the meat and for us that’s why it makes it the best poutine in the city. The place is small and classy, super good food.
Sandwich is good but it’s overhyped. The dining experience is very stressful and crammed to the point you can’t even pick up the sandwich.
Reached there before 12, queue was manageable. When I left after 12, queue was longer, about 20 minutes. Great food with great service and great story. But place is always packed to the brim as always a legendary place deserves. I was asked to tip, rejected at first then got an explanation why they deserve to be tipped. So I tipped. Lol
BEST sandwich ever ! I’m totally blown away ! Very impressive with the default sauce.
I’m visiting Montreal and was really looking forward to trying this spot, as it seems to have a lot of history. While there were some positives, my overall experience was a bit mixed. I ordered the smoked meat sandwich, and the flavor itself was good. However, the meat was quite greasy, which unfortunately left me with an uncomfortable, gassy stomach afterward. The fries were also disappointing—soggy, overly heavy, and darker than expected—so I wasn’t able to finish them. On a positive note, the staff were friendly and the service was efficient. That said, the overall atmosphere felt like the restaurant may have seen better days, with things coming across a bit routine rather than intentional. With some attention to food preparation and perhaps a refresh of the space, this place could really live up to its reputation again. I’m glad I tried it, but I do think there’s room for improvement.
Absolutely amazing experience at Schwartz’s World Famous Original Smoked Meat! They serve the most delicious sandwich in the world — rich, flavorful, and unforgettable. A must-try if you’re in Montreal!
Fans of “The Bear” should jump at this life-imitates-art opportunity to get yelled at for ordering a sandwich.
Must have when in Montreal!
This restaurant is a Montréal institution for smoked meat. And cheesecake. I have been coming to this restaurant for close to 50 years.
