What guests say about Schwartz's Deli

Schwartz's Deli is often described as a true Montreal institution, with very tender, flavorful smoked meat and generous portions. Many customers also like the fries, pickles, and poutine, as well as the fast and efficient service when everything goes well. On the downside, the place is often crowded and very cramped, and some people find the prices high or the service inconsistent, sometimes even brusque. It’s a good choice if you want the classic smoked meat experience in Montreal, but less ideal if you’re looking for calm or good value for money.

The smoked meat sandwiches are delicious, I would recommend the lean or medium one. The food was served quite speedy.

Went in for a late lunch (around 3:30 pm), had to wait for a table (3-4 mins). so if you’re planning to go in for lunch or dinner, give yourself enough time to wait in line. Order the poutine Swartz and the quarter chicken with Swartz (comes with slices of bread, coleslaw and pickle). The meat were delicious, not too salty but flavourful.

Schwartz’s was some of the best smoked meat and classic kosher deli vibe I’ve ever experienced! The smoked meat platter genuinely rocked my world; it comes in a massive portion with a variety of cuts from fatty to lean, and each bite was just so tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. The service was super friendly and efficient, and the cooks/waiters behind the counter were extremely welcoming despite the constant endless crowd. Not to mention, the coleslaw was literally the best I’ve ever had…no mayo, just crisp, sweetly sour green goodness. Totally worth waiting on line for (but the line moves quite fast anyway)!!!

Food and service was great, but there was a very odd smell in the restaurant. Not alot of seating and very crammed.

Super fast take out line. We took our sandwiches to Mont Royal park to eat. Got a smoked meat sandwich, a pickle and sprite. They were DELICIOUS. Must eat here if you’re visiting Montreal.

Schwartz's Deli is a very cool place, happy we went there to try it out. The food did not disappoint. Keep in mind when going - it is a VERY small place, entrance is very small - waiting and standing room is outside in the weather - tables are shared, very little elbow room. You feel rushed to eat though - get some take out, eat it at home or at a park, make sure you have lots of napkins - the food is good.

Not as big as I was hoping! My sandwich was half this full, but maybe for the best 😂 Was very tasty and I recommend the cherry soda to go with it.

I'm not sure what's so special about smoked meat in montreal. Asked for medium fat, but it was extremely lean.

You can't visit Montreal and not go to Schwartz's Deli. Waiting in line to get inside is well worth the wait. In line outside, we were approached by what I can assume was the owner - doing a headcount and gladhandling the patrons. Once inside we sat down and ordered the smoked meat sandwich, with side coleslaw and pickle. The coleslaw was excellent and the pickles are half the reason people visit. The poutine is a must. A staple of the community, go hungry, leave full.

We were visiting Vermont and took the day to go in to Canada. We sought out going to Schwartz’s deli since it was listed in the top 10 things to do / see. The smoked meat sandwich was good. Not very many options for the picky eaters. Super busy with a standing line outside. Our server was friendly and helpful.

Schwartz’s Deli truly feels like a piece of Montreal’s history. The smoked meat sandwich absolutely lives up to the reputation — tender, juicy, perfectly seasoned, and stacked generously on classic rye bread with mustard. You can instantly understand why people call it one of the best smoked meat spots in Canada. The atmosphere is old-school, crowded, and full of energy, which honestly adds to the charm of the experience. Even with the long lineups, the service moves surprisingly fast. The pickles, fries, and black cherry soda pair perfectly with the sandwich and complete the authentic deli experience. Yes, it gets busy and touristy, but after one bite, you realize why this place has remained legendary for decades. It’s amazing to know that even international superstar Celine Dion became part-owner of this iconic spot, which makes the place feel even more legendary and deeply connected to Montreal’s culture. Being recognized by the Michelin Guide only adds to its reputation as one of Montreal’s truly iconic food destinations. Definitely a must-visit in Montreal for anyone who appreciates classic comfort food and legendary food spots. Visit Timestamp: May 21st, 2026; 10:00pm (EST)
