If you’re looking for a classic, upscale steakhouse experience in Old Montreal, Gibbys absolutely delivers. From the moment you step inside, the historic stone walls and warm lighting create an elegant, intimate atmosphere that feels timeless. It’s the kind of place that’s perfect for anniversaries, client dinners, or a refined night out. The food is outstanding. The steaks are cooked perfectly to temperature — tender, flavorful, and expertly seasoned. The lobster is fresh and beautifully presented, and the sides are generous and satisfying. Everything feels thoughtfully prepared and high quality. Service is another highlight. The staff are professional, attentive, and knowledgeable without being intrusive. They guide you through the menu and wine list with confidence, making the whole evening feel seamless. Yes, it’s on the premium side price-wise, but the quality, ambiance, and consistency make it worth it. Gibbys is a true Montreal classic — and for good reason. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a traditional steakhouse done right.

Had a business dinner here and food was great, staff were very friendly.
Best dining experience in Montreal. We were visiting for a weekend looking for a nice restaurant that was kid friendly. The food was great, but Charlie’s service was fantastic. Highly recommend.
Food good as always so that’s a given. Fabulous service by Cynthia last night, probably one of the best restaurant services I have ever had. Thank you Cynthia for making the night so memorable :)
This was our third visit to Gibbys in just over two months and it was incredible again. Sarah and Claude were amazing. Sarah was our waitress two weeks ago too, and we were so happy to see her again. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly medium rare and my girlfriend’s sea bass was delicious. We had French onion soup to start and a spicy margarita in a martini glass, which was so good. We cannot wait to come back.
The food and service was exceptional. Sarah was very sweet and made the experience top tier. She's awesome!
Absolutely horrible experience. Given this restaurant’s reputation as one of the best steakhouses in Montreal, we had high expectations and were eager to try it. Unfortunately, the service was extremely poor. Our server rushed through every interaction despite the restaurant not being busy, which made the experience feel careless and impersonal. After waiting over an hour and a half for our steaks, our appetite was already gone. To make matters worse, the steak I ordered medium arrived well done and was essentially inedible. For a steak priced at over $100, the quality of the food, service, and overall ambiance was unacceptable , especially for a Valentine’s Day dinner. This was far from the experience one would expect at a restaurant of this caliber.
I had a great time at Gibbys and the food was amazing. Special thank you to Sarah, she made our evening so much better and I will come back just for her!
Horrible restaurant and the staff are very rude
Traditional Montreal steakhouse, excellent food, excellent service, traditional atmosphere. They also have an excellent selection of seafood and an amazing wine list.
We had a wonderful experience here! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and romantic, perfect for celebrating a birthday as a couple. The complimentary birthday cake was beautiful and very tasty. A special thank you to Genevieve for being so attentive, kind, and friendly throughout our visit. We truly appreciated the thoughtful service and had a very happy celebration here.
Institution for a reason.
I really hoped that the food would have been better. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's quite good, but it doesn't stand out at all from the other quality steaks I've had. That plus the price tag made it underwhelming for me. In terms of atmosphere, it's a very cool looking place. The staff are very polite and professional but the crowd that eats there have off a very arrogant and pretentious vibe.
When I go to gibby’s I eat like a king and i’m treated like one too… I’ll always return
Gibbys is an amazing establishment with absolutely unforgettable food, service, ambience, and very cool history. I'm not sure if Kas still works there, but he was our server and literally was my favorite person I met in Montreal for our long weekend getaway. We were there a YEAR ago and I haven't forgotten about Gibbys and Kas! Everything we had was perfect delicious. We will definitely return next time we're in Montreal! Photos shared too!
We came here for my boyfriend’s birthday with high expectations but were disappointed. The night started with me asking a few questions about wines, which the waiter didn’t seem to have much knowledge on, instead of asking someone else he specifically said the Riesling was a sweet wine and wouldn’t pair with steak, however after a quick google search, the wine is a dry minerally wine, which I don’t expect a server to know every wine, but I wouldn’t recommend saying your not sure than giving false information. He then went to ask the sommelier for a recommendation, but he didn’t ask us what type of wine we were looking for, and came back to suggest a 130$ bottle, with the only reasoning that it was recommended. With no proper explanation of the wine I wouldn’t purchase a 130$ bottle. Also if there is a sommelier, why are they not sent to the table to help pick a wine or recommendation? Also when we came back with the recommendation, he brought the menu to my boyfriend even though I had been the ones asking the question?? For the steaks, the waiter asked if we wanted the steak spices on top or on the side, and the waiter wrote it down on his notepad, which my boyfriend asked for the spices on the side, yet we were served steaks with spices on them. (In my opinion it makes it worse if it written down and the mistake is made) . We decided not to say anything on the spot as the steak is still yummy and doesn’t seem worth wasting a while piece of meat for a simple mistake. In the reservation we had made a note that we were celebrating his birthday. At the end of the meal after asking for the bill, the waiter brought the bill and was about to get the card machine, and came back to say he heard it was a birthday, and said he would be right back. He brought out a cake which is presumably their policy, but he didn’t ask us first, which yes it is nice but neither me or my boyfriend particularly wanted cake, so we ate some of it out of guilt of a whole cake brought out. The steaks were good, also the German Riesling was a good dry white wine with steaks. The experience with the wine really tainted my experience, I know it is not a wine bar but at a restaurant where the bill is over 300$ you would hope to have a better service. At the end they take a picture on a Polaroid and give it to you which is cute. With the whole experience I don’t count myself coming back or recommending it to anyone either.
I debated even writing this review, as I don’t usually leave restaurant reviews—positive or negative. I received a gift card to Gibby’s for Christmas and was genuinely excited to return. The gift card was purchased over the phone and was ready for pickup at the time of our reservation, which went smoothly. We were seated at a very tight table for two, with our chairs wedged between the backs of neighboring tables. While uncomfortable, we managed to settle in without disrupting other diners. Shortly after, another couple was seated at the table beside us, requiring us to stand—with drinks in hand—to allow them access to their seats. Unfortunately, this became a recurring issue throughout the evening. Our server, Sebastian, repeatedly squeezed past us to pour water, take orders, and deliver food, frequently bumping into me without offering an apology. The neighboring table eventually raised concerns about the lack of space and was reassigned, which once again required us to get up so they could exit. When salads, pickles, and bread arrived (all of which were very good), yet another table was seated nearby, and once again we had to interrupt our meal to let new diners through. Menus were passed over my head, and the repeated bumping continued. I was bumped well over a dozen times during the course of the meal without any acknowledgment. For our mains, we ordered two Gibby’s cuts cooked medium. They arrived medium rare. While not prepared as requested, the food was still enjoyable, and we chose not to send it back. Overall, the food was solid. Unfortunately, the service left much to be desired. When it came time to pay, I mentioned the gift card. Having served before, I had already calculated a 20% tip based on the full bill, not just the remaining balance after the gift card was applied. The gift card was processed, the remaining balance paid by debit, and the tip entered accordingly. As I handed the payment machine back and said thank you, Sebastian tore off the receipt, tossed it onto the table, and walked away abruptly. If a 20% tip is considered unsatisfactory, I would suggest checking in with guests shortly after their mains arrive, minimizing physical disruptions throughout the meal, and offering a simple “excuse me” or “sorry” when repeatedly bumping into diners. Regardless of the tip amount, acknowledging and thanking guests is just good manners and what I would think is expected when you are representing a business. While the food was good, Montreal has many excellent restaurants. At Gibby’s price point, the overall experience matters just as much as the food—and unfortunately, this experience didn’t feel worth it. I’m glad this was a gift card, and I’ll be choosing a different restaurant to recommend or gift in the future.
⭐ Food Review: Gibby’s – Old Montreal I pass by this restaurant during the day and never knew that this place has such a rich history within the community. Gibby’s has that unmistakable Old Montreal charm -- stone walls, warm lighting, and a sense that dinner is meant to be an occasion. Our visit leaned into that spirit beautifully. 🍷 Wine - Tenuta Geretto 2021 (White Wine). The evening opened with a crisp, elegant pour of Tenuta Geretto 2021. It struck a lovely balance - bright acidity, subtle fruit, and just enough minerality to refresh the palate between bites. A clean, versatile white that paired surprisingly well with a hearty steak. 🥩 Main Course - Rib Eye Boneless Steak (Enough for Two). Gibby’s is known for its classic steakhouse approach, and the rib eye delivered exactly that. Generously portioned - easily shared between two - it arrived perfectly cooked, with that signature Gibby’s char on the outside and tender richness inside. The cut had great marbling, translating into deep, buttery flavor without feeling heavy. Sharing it made the experience feel indulgent without being overwhelming. 🍮 Dessert - Crème Brûlée. A classic ending done right. The sugar crust cracked with that satisfying tap, revealing a silky custard underneath. Not overly sweet, not overly dense - just a smooth, comforting finish to a rich meal. 🎯 Overall Impression Gibby’s remains a quintessential Old Montreal dining experience: generous portions, timeless dishes, and a setting that feels both historic and celebratory. The combination of a crisp Italian white, a shareable rib eye, and a well-executed crème brûlée made for a memorable evening that balanced indulgence with elegance.
My first time at Gibbys. Just wow! We went there before the Paul McCartney concert in November. The food and atmosphere were amazing. But the best part of our evening was the service. Our server Linda truly made it a memorable experience. Will definitely be back soon!
We had a wonderful time and truly enjoyed our experience at Gibbys. The food was excellent from start to finish, and Genevieve, our waitress, was fantastic very friendly, attentive, and made the evening even better! We highly recommend the Oyster Rockefeller, and you can’t go wrong with the filet mignon or the beef Wellington.
Obsessed with their lunch special. The chicken was so flavorful and I wish I could eat their Monte Carlo potato every single day. Very professional service and quality food!
We visited over the Christmas break as a group of six and had the most amazing time! The ambiance was incredible, so cozy and festive right before Christmas. Our waitress, Genevieve, was absolutely wonderful and took such great care of us. The food was outstanding, especially the escargots entrée, which was truly out of this world would recommend trying it. Genevieve also recommended fantastic wines that paired beautifully with our meal. Thank you so much for the warm hospitality & we will definitely be back!
Had a disappointing evening when the staff had given her umbrella to another irate customer. Very disappointing that an establishment like Gibby's can be pressured like this and ruining the evening of guests. There was no attempt by the restaurant for any compensation for their poor mismanagement of their coat check Overall, the question of is this worth the hype anymore for better service you can in other steakhouses
Unfortunately this place is no longer what it used to be. The bread has changed. It’s low quality and not soft or warm. They no longer give you bacon bits at your table They no longer offer cottage cheese Our salad was almost inedible as there was way too much dressing. It seemed like they knew that had put too much dressing so they threw on a pile of arugula to make up for it. Over all service was OK but slow. Steak was delicious but the potato was old and crusty. Only a small portion of the inside was edible. The ladies washroom was very dirty.
One of the best experiences at a restaurant I have ever had. The staff were amazing and the food is one of a kind - there wasn’t a single dish that disappointed.
