We had a wonderful lunch at Chez Boulay during our visit to Quebec City. We made reservations in advance and were pleasantly surprised by the incredible value of their $30 prix fixe lunch menu. For the quality of food and overall experience, it felt like an amazing deal. This was also my first time trying Nordic Québécois cuisine, which made the experience even more memorable. The flavour combinations and ingredients felt very unique, refined, and thoughtfully curated. I was genuinely impressed. The flavours throughout the meal were vibrant, fresh, and showcased high quality ingredients. Our favourite dishes were the bruschetta and the beetroot salad, both of which tasted incredibly fresh and full of flavour. The fish dish was also excellent and surprisingly hearty and comforting. We upgraded to the tiramisu for an additional $6. While it was enjoyable, it did not quite reach the same level as the other dishes we had during the meal. Our server was also fantastic, very friendly, funny, and provided excellent customer service throughout the lunch. I can absolutely see why this restaurant made it onto the Michelin Guide. We are already looking forward to returning to Quebec City in the future to try their dinner service, which they are especially known for, as well as their sister restaurant Les Botanistes near the airport.
Reviews / Ratings for Chez Boulay-bistro boréal
Fine ingredients cooked well, nice wine and a helpful service
This was an amazing dining experience. The food was incredible. Must try the Onion soup!
A perfect experience, great food and amazing staff!
Outstanding dining experience at Chez Boulay – Bistro Boréal. The preparation and presentation of the dishes were excellent, with a clear emphasis on regional ingredients and careful execution rather than unnecessary complexity. The menu captured the northern Quebec “boréal” concept well while still feeling approachable and refined. The red wine selections were also very good, offering strong pairings for the richer and game-focused dishes. A memorable meal and one of the stronger dining experiences in Quebec City for those who appreciate thoughtful cuisine and a polished but comfortable atmosphere.
Fantastic!
Absolutely wonderful restaurant great food great wine selection - attentive but relaxed ‘bistro’ style waiting staff. A fun place with outstanding food. One of the best in Q-City
Very knowledgeable staff. Great menu, food and cocktails.
We went to this restaurant on recommendation of our friend that lives in Quebec City. The food was delicious and served quickly. The service was non - existent aside from the food coming to our table. Our server actually left midway through our time there and we did not appear to have anyone replace her. We could not get anyone's attention for more drinks or even the bill. We felt like we were possibly being ignored because we are english speaking as we saw other french speaking tables getting much better service. Would not go back or recommend to english speaking friends.
I had the venison pate en croute and duck breast: both were very good. My wife loved the onion soup and beef cheek. Atmosphere was great, and we were seated right away with a reservation.
This was one of the best dinning experiences we've had. The waitress we had was so friendly and gave great recommendations. If I could have eaten here twice on a short trip I wish I did. They even remembered and helped celebrate my wife's birthday. Great food and atmosphere.
Clearly overrated. We were seated at the chef’s table, which, in my opinion, is one of the best seats in the restaurant. It set a high expectation for the meal, but unfortunately, what followed did not live up to it. We ordered the pan-seared foie gras, deer plate, and onion soup as appetizers, followed by the duck breast, beef, halibut, and carbonara as mains, with scallops on the side. To be fair, some of it may come down to personal preference. We did not particularly enjoy the sourdough bread or the deer plate, but I can see how others might feel differently. The onion soup was the clear highlight of the meal and, honestly, the only dish we genuinely enjoyed. The pan-seared foie gras was disappointing. It did not feel properly seared and came across as overly oily, leaving a greasy aftertaste. The carbonara was the biggest letdown. The pasta itself seemed freshly made, which should have been a positive, but a clump of stuck-together dough made its way into the dish and ended up in my mouth. That was very unpleasant. The duck breast was quite chewy, and the fried cornflower (?) on the side did not leave much of an impression. The beef was acceptable, but nothing memorable. The scallops were also underwhelming and lacked flavour. Halibut was standard. Surprisingly, the fried potato wedges were probably one of the better items: nicely fried, hot, and well served. Overall, aside from the onion soup and potato wedges, the meal was disappointing and did not live up to the restaurant’s reputation.
The food was incredible! A perfect 5 stars. They change their menu 4-5x per year and I only wish I lived closer so I visit each time. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because of the service. We ordered an appetizer with our mains, but our mains came out first. When we mentioned the missing appetizers, the waiter who brought out our food said they never received an order for the appetizer. They took back our mains and put in the order for the app. This was all fine but it took us a while to get our food because of this. The waitress who took our initial order seemed absent minded, lost and not really paying attention. When it was time to order dessert our waitress took 20 minutes to come back for our order even though our menus were closed and we were trying to get her attention. She passed by our table several times purposefully avoiding eye contact with us. That being said the desserts were absolutely incredible! I highly recommend the creme brûlée and goat cheese cremeux.
Visited from Toronto. This is a great, chic and elegant restaurant in Quebec City. It has great Quebec style dishes, drinks & dessert. We really enjoyed the carpaccio appetizer & the fish main dish! Our server Floron was phenomenal and provided excellent & funny service during our dinner. Highly recommend!
This restaurant is Five Star Outstanding. I proposed to my boyfriend last evening at Boulay and the staff were more than accommodating. They placed the ring in a beautiful little box with edible flowers surrounding it and brought it to the table telling my boyfriend it was a special gift. When he opened it and saw the ring I got down on one knee and asked him to marry me. With tears in his eyes and a Big smile on his face he said “YES”. The chef came out to congratulate us and gave us glasses of Champagne to celebrate. The food was just amazing. We will celebrate at this wonderful restaurant for years to come!
The restaurant Chez Boulay was a wonderful experience. During my stay in Quebec, I wasn’t specifically looking for restaurants like this, so discovering it was a great surprise. This is not your typical diner — it’s a true restaurant where the product is treated with care, and where the knowledge and technique in the kitchen are evident. I had the onion soup and the beef cheeks. The onion soup is very original, presented like a coffee, with the bread and cheese on the side resembling toast. Beyond the presentation, the flavor is excellent. The beef cheeks, on the other hand, are rich, well-balanced, and full of depth. What truly completes the experience is the service. I’d especially like to highlight Florian, the waiter who served me, for his attentive, friendly, and highly professional approach. When the food is already outstanding, this level of service elevates everything even further. A highly recommended restaurant for anyone looking to enjoy a genuine fine dining experience.
Excellent food and wonderful servers and staff.
We were fortune enough to walk into this restaurant after a day of wandering through Old Quebec. Excellent service and food! We particularly enjoyed the duck dish and beef cheek dish.
I went here for a late brunch and was shocked to find that it was relatively empty. The atmosphere was relaxed and very refined. Everything was clean and you get a good view of the kitchen which is shockingly organised and efficient. I ended up getting the smoked salmon served with potatoes and berries, which sounds basic but the dish itself was elevated. Small size but the potato was crisp, warm, buttery and rectangular. The salmon was freshly paired and tasted soft but looked very smoked. The extra garnishes made a wonderful presentation and the berries were small but had a lot of flavour, added a bit of sourness. For the mains it was a cheddar croquette with a mushroom base with potatoes and a honey vinaigrette. Another dish that sounds basic but it was masterfully done. Many different herbs adding to the aromatics, and the croquette was very crisp, with the cheddar being very sharp, apparently aged 2 years. The mushrooms though few were notable, and the honey was surprisingly strong not sweet, but balanced the acidity with the rest of the dish well. Both were very beautiful. This is a spot that stands out and is surprisingly affordable for the quality. Additionally the berry smoothie and espresso on the side is very good. One complaint is despite the lack of people I had multiple servers which was quite odd, but they still gave good recommendations, but I do feel at busier times people could get left quite long. Overall great French restaurant that has very unique takes on dishes that stands out amongst a lot of the more touristy places around.
This restaurant is a must. Make reservations. The set menu was everything it was promised to be. The staff was engaging.
There was a group of 12 from abroad on a business trip. Everyone absolutely RAVED about the entire evening. The food was top drawer!
Delicious food! The beef cheek was tender and the sauce was so good! Also enjoyed the foie gras and the seal meatloaf. Highly recommend for high quality food at a reasonable price!
Go here. Just do it.
I went here for dinner. I did not have a reservation, and was seated at the bar. service was friendly and fast. the mocktail was delicious, as well as the entree and the main. I was too full for dessert. I liked it so much i am tempted to return again. It is certainly not cheap, but bloody delicious.
We were staying at the Hotel Manoir Victoria and had dinner at Chez Boulay. The meal was delicious and the staff were very attentive. Highly recommended
