Chez Boulay-Bistro Boréal receives a lot of praise for its refined cuisine with northern flavors, well-presented dishes, and portions often considered satisfying. The service is frequently described as attentive, warm, and knowledgeable, although a few guests noted service missteps, dishes served lukewarm or cold, or service that sometimes felt rushed. This is a must-go restaurant in Quebec City. The food is delightful, the service impeccable, and the atmosphere classy.
I had my first traditional Québec meal here, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my day in Québec City. The food was memorable and gave me a great introduction to local cuisine. Everything felt welcoming, and the service was excellent. The middle-aged gentleman who served me was especially kind, attentive, and patient throughout the meal. As a visitor, first impressions matter, and this restaurant made my first Québec dining experience a very happy one. Thank you for the warm hospitality. I would gladly recommend this place to anyone visiting Québec City.
We had a wonderful dinner at Chez Boulay. Our waiter was friendly and professional. He made wonderful suggestions for food and wine. The food was excellent!
My family made a point of dining here during our trip because my daughter is Native and loves supporting Native-owned businesses whenever she can. We decided to order a variety of dishes and share everything so we could experience as much of the menu as possible. I loved having the opportunity to try unique items that were completely new to us, including the seal meatloaf and local fish. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared, with flavors that were balanced and intentional. Our favorite entrée of the evening was the duck, which was cooked perfectly and quickly became the unanimous favorite at the table. For me, though, the desserts were the true standout. I love desserts that balance creamy and tart flavors, and the Ash Moose was exactly that. It was incredibly flavorful and memorable. We also ordered the Honey Parfait, which paired beautifully with it. Its sweetness provided a nice contrast and complemented the tartness of the Ash Moose perfectly. Our server was professional, attentive, and knowledgeable throughout the evening. While he wasn't overly chatty, he took excellent care of us. Our water and wine glasses were always full, and despite the many questions we had about the menu and ingredients, he answered every one with confidence and patience. This was a unique dining experience that gave us the opportunity to try foods and flavors we might not encounter elsewhere, and we're very glad we made it part of our trip.
Great food and service - every dish was flavourful and tastefully designed.
Absolute brilliant restaurant. Amazing high quality inventive interesting menu, fair prices and great service. 10/10
Excellent Restaurant. Great Service and Great Food Good ambience.
Chez Boulay is a must-visit restaurant in Old Québec. From the moment we arrived, it was clear why this place is so highly regarded. The atmosphere is warm, elegant, and welcoming, with a unique Nordic-inspired concept that reflects the local terroir and ingredients of Québec. The food was outstanding. Every dish was beautifully presented, and more importantly, incredibly flavorful. The quality of the ingredients was evident in every bite, and the menu showcased creative combinations while remaining true to local cuisine. It was one of those meals where each course was memorable and left us looking forward to the next. The service was equally impressive. The staff were exceptionally professional, attentive, and knowledgeable about both the food and wine selections. They struck the perfect balance between being present when needed and allowing us to enjoy our meal comfortably. A word of advice: the restaurant is extremely popular and was packed during our visit. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during the tourist season, as getting a table without one may be difficult. Overall, Chez Boulay delivered an exceptional dining experience with outstanding food, impeccable service, and a wonderful atmosphere. It fully deserves its reputation and was one of the highlights of our visit to Québec City. Highly recommended.
The food was delicious, albeit a bit boring. The beef cheek is a must order - very tender, very sumptuous, very good. You can tell they've made this a million times. The Arctic Char was a bit less impressive. The skin wasn't as crisp as we would have liked, but everything tasted fresh. The price tag was the most offensive part of this meal. It's hard to complain though since literally everything else in this tourist trap of an area has a comparable price point. If you're looking for delicious, regular food and you don't mind spending, this is the place to go.
What a fabulous brunch! I would give them 10 stars if I could! The food was exquisite, the service was attentive without being overbearing, the atmosphere is delightful. I highly recommend Chaz Boulay to anyone visiting Quebec!
Awesome restaurant. Very friendly staff with excellent food quality. Personal favorite would be the beef cheek. The onion soup is special with the foam on top. I would highly recommend this to everyone.
The food and service were both excellent. We had the Cheese plate as an appetizer, the selection was excellent. The beef cheek was melt in your mouth, the flat iron steak was excellent and the Halibut was something else the flavours were amazing. We had the crème brûlée and the cheesecake both of which had their own twists and were exceptional. I’d give this 6 stars if I could.
Excellent dining experience. The beef cheeks were incredibly tender and full of flavor. The rosé wine recommended by the sommelier was a perfect match for the meal. I finished with the crème brûlée, which was delicious. Great food, excellent service, and a very enjoyable atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Enjoyed the set price lunch menu. Excellent pork main; starter and dessert were creative and fun.
Great food and outstanding hospitality. The taste, presentation, and attention to detail were excellent. Highly recommended!
Fantastic!
Perfect in all respects. Staff really work hard to make it a good experience, the food is superb, and the room has a good buzz.
Our best dinner in Quebec City! Everything was exceptional; food, service and ambiance (casual upscale). Fine dining with nice portion size, complex flavors with nice use of locally sourced ingredients. Our server was attentive but not intrusive and gave great descriptions of the menu options.
For us, this lived up to the hype. It's not 'the best' fine dining we've had, but at this price point it was a really delicious experience. Great attention to the ingredients and flavors. The braised beef cheek was extremely tender, although perhaps a little too rich by the end, and the duck was perfectly done. Good service as well, and good ambiance. Reservations generally required for dinner.
Tasteless, not well-cooked food with nasty souces all over. Duck is hard and not chewable. Onion is burned. Fuagra is nothing special and berry souce don't fit at all. Disappointed really. Who is writing good reviews?
the service is great. Spaghetti Carbonara is a must try. However, for the price I paid, the food portion is too small.
Was expecting much more of an “award winning chef”. Our server was very nice- but it was super packed and noisy. The food was actually quite meh, no salt, we had the signature dish beef cheeks and the steak. Both meats seemed like our meat wasn’t properly brined in salt and was quite flavorless. The steak was a bit rubbery. The toppings for the beef cheeks was milky and kind of dampened the flavor even more unfortunately. They source strictly from what’s locally available so the side dish was plain turnips but had zero detectable spices and not enough salt and was bland. The presentation looks beautiful but did not match our expectation for a flavourful dish. We went to the restaurant at Nordic spa in old Quebec which was so much better than this restaurant. The server was sorry we didn’t enjoy our food, each bite was a struggle to be honest. He gave us sorbet on house to make up for our disappointment which was nice, but if you are fussy about experiencing truly high end flavors, good salt levels and high dining experience I would try the Nordic cafe instead.
Unpretentious, high quality food, albeit a limited menu, and attentive service. My wife and I both had the Gaspesie Halibut, and it was superb -- the kind of piece of fish you can't get at home. We're giving the food 5 stars even though the desert was the kind of desert (some sort of concoction with chocolate on the outside and creme and raspberry and a bit of pepper inside) that a chef would be proud of but we didn't much like. Reasonable prices for what you're getting.
Unique food prepared with pride and care.
