Some of the most innovative food in North America, not just Quebec! Chez Jean Paul is one of the great restaurants in North America. It’s a true farm-to-table/ local-first restaurant, but without the annoying pretension of Noma and its clones. The flavors are exciting, but also subtle and complex. For such a small place and a fairly reasonable price, what the chef is doing is phenomenal, and rivals many Michelin star restaurants. It’s a modern, innovative restaurant, but also homely and honest. Cannot recommend it enough. Highlights were the parsnip + scallop crudo, poached oyster with celeriac and razor clams, and the sunchoke with raddichio marmalade and XO.

Gem we discovered thanks to some recommendations from strangers! The smaller setting made for a really great intimate atmosphere where my friends and I could chat easily. We were seated at the bar (last minute reservation on a Saturday), but they thoughtfully gave us a corner to face each other. We also had a great time talking to the staff! We went for the tasting menu and wine pairing, and thoroughly enjoyed all of it! The mushroom dessert was a pleasant surprise.
Honestly, this was disappointing, especially considering how many good reviews this place has. While the food itself tasted great, we didn’t have a good overall experience. The day we went, it was extremely cold inside and the heater wasn’t working, which made it very uncomfortable to enjoy the meal. What made the experience even more confusing was that we were waiting for what we thought was our last dessert, only to be told that the entire course included just one dessert. I would have appreciated knowing this earlier, as we would have left right after finishing instead of sitting there in the cold waiting. Overall, the food was good, but the experience wasn’t. I’m not sure if I would give this place a second chance.
Not worth it. Went on a Saturday night, 8:30pm and there was one group leaving and one other group eating, that’s it. Place was empty on prime time and food was not it. They try to over complicate things (eg. strong cheese on berry donuts for dessert). I was very disappointed with my experience. I think they should stick to basics to get more people to come and then start trying out new things, but might’ve just been unlucky too…
