My parents visited here 50 years ago and loved the experience. Our first time to Quebec City we made it a point to stop. We loved the experience , the food choices, staff , and overall experience. You’ll not be disappointed if you visit for a meal.

Great stop after a day in the cold, walking old Quebec. The fixed lunch menu was great. Super staff.
Summary This is a rare bastion of integrity in a landscape of commercial artifice. It does not rely on the frantic gimmicks of modern dining; it simply exists as a superior institution. It is good for families and remains my favorite in the city. I have been many times. The Experience The atmosphere is grounded in historical permanence—authentic, quiet, and A+. The service follows suit with a disciplined professionalism that avoids the hollow, forced cheer of the service industry. The Food & Value The menu is simple and good. It is traditional, honest, and executed with A+ precision. There is no need for performative plating when the quality is this absolute. Furthermore, the price is great. The Verdict An exceptional convergence of food, service, and setting. It is excellent because it refuses to be anything other than what it is.
Had bison , deer and ?? Steak was amazing
Delicious food, great atmosphere and music. Excellent service.
Excellent quality of food. The beef tenderloin was delectable with the mustard gravey. Vegetables were fresh and crisp. Loved the maple syrup pie (like a butter tart), very sweet but went well with a black tea.
A fantastic spot for traditional québeqoise food. In one of the old city's oldest houses (1670), the atmosphere can't be beat.
The service is amazing here! Super friendly staff and something about eat in a 17th century home just sets the mood right! The food however, is indescribable. My wife and I got the Grandmas special and the pork tenderloin, and we had to pause while we ate, just to take in how amazing the food was! I don't know how they make the Tenderloin mustard sauce and the meatball ragout sauce, but there must be pounds of magic because we were STUNNED with how good the flavor was. We ate it so fast I couldn't take a photo! Please come here and order the tenderloin and Grandma's plate. It is flavours and dishes everyone must try!
So glad to have eaten at this historic place and experienced the multigenerational food from and inspection of cultures and time. Our waiter was fantastic.
Atmosphere is charming and rustic. Food is overpriced and less than average. The seafood platter was entirely disappointing and one of the most expensive items on the menu at $75. You would think it be excellent. But nope. The goat cheese salad was alright, but again, not worth $45. All in all, after years of walking past this place, hoping to get a table (reservations always required), we are happy to never come back here.
We had a lovely lunch here on a snowy day at a charming table by the fireplace. The wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful in making the best choice for a meal. We had several dishes we'd never tasted before and they were delicious. You
Such a disappointing experience. Prices are exorbitant for what is served, both in quality and presentation. If the food had tasted good, we wouldn’t have minded paying for quality, but charging 40-50 dollars for a dish that is luke warm, tastes bland and is clearly reheated is a rip off. The veggies are clearly from a frozen bag. There are so many other great restaurants around that are priced much better and quality is far superior. Don’t waste your time here. On the plus side, The staff was friendly.
I had the meat pie with deer, bison, elk, and beef, and my girlfriend had the hunter chicken. Both dishes were dry, overcooked, and clearly reheated. Everything came out lukewarm and the vegetables tasted like they were previously frozen. For the price they charge, it was very disappointing and not worth it. The menu prices are very high even if the food was executed perfectly much higher then the neighboring restaurants.
I could not go in to the restaurant because it was too costly for me. I admired its architecture from the outside, as it has a significance as the oldest standing residential house in Quebec City (Maison François-Jacquet-Dit-Langevin, 1690).
Restaurant Aux Ancient Canadiens hosted our group of 16 in March 2026 with a Table d' Hote and the food and service was superb. We especially enjoyed the sampling of traditional Quebecois dishes. I've dined here several times since first finding it in 1981 and it's always a treat.
Lovely atmosphere, forgettable plates First of all, the service was excellent. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, the location is great, and the atmosphere feels like stepping into a cozy mountain house. The dining room is small and warm, and they also offer a very good selection of beers. Unfortunately, the food was a real disappointment. The dishes are traditional and sounded delicious on the menu, but when they arrived they gave the impression of frozen food that had simply been reheated. We ordered the St-Jean meat pie, which arrived visibly dry. It felt a bit like eating homemade food that a loving aunt might cook and send frozen by mail. That kind of food can feel special because you imagine the care behind it but once it goes through the freezing and reheating process, something is lost. It simply wasn’t what we expected. We also ordered the onion soup. It was quite watery, and the bread inside had a strange texture, beyond just being soaked. It wasn’t terrible and it was still drinkable, but considering the price and the restaurant’s reputation, it was underwhelming One detail that surprised me: when we ordered, the waiter told us the dishes would be ready “in 15 minutes.” The precision was impressive… maybe that’s just the defrosting time 😅 For context, this was a weekday dinner and the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, I honestly don’t know, but the food didn’t live up to the expectations created by the menu, the prices, and the history of the place.
Amazing traditional food and really nice atmosphere!
The price is way too high for the quality of food. The onion soup is super salty, the beef wellington is in the bed of wet sauce??? The wild game meat is great without the sauce, but the sauce is terrible
Unfortunately, the food was over cooked and bland. Service was good. The establishment plays up the charm of this old building but can’t deliver on the food.
Great nice visit! Yes, it is very coldest!
