I was skeptical that this might be a tourist trap, especially since it's located in the heart of old town of Quebec and has way too many reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. Highly recommend the breakfast poutine. Im not a poutine person but very much enjoyed it. Also visit the washroom lol it's very cool.
What guests say about La Buche
La Bûche is highly appreciated for its authentic Quebec cuisine, hearty brunches, and desserts like pouding chômeur. The atmosphere is warm, original, and festive, with the decor often mentioned in reviews as a major highlight. Several customers recommend booking ahead, as the place is often very busy and a bit cramped or noisy. A few reviews also mention high prices and, occasionally, uneven service or wait times.
Reviews / Ratings for La Buche
Went for brunch on Easter Monday with my family (3 adults and 2 kids) and really enjoyed it. The service was excellent: La Bûche is lucky to have servers like Yoan and Audrey. Yoan recommended the Cassolette du bûcheron, and it was really, really good — eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, mushrooms, béchamel, potatoes, spinach, and cheese curd in a mini cast iron. There was something special about it that set it apart from a typical breakfast plate. Also, the toast was like eating a cloud. The menus are printed in old-school Canada workbook style like the ones we had in school growing up. And yeah, everyone wears flannel, but I don’t know anything more Québécois than bathroom soap dispensers made out of Labatt 50 bottles. Hearty, tasty food, fun vibe, good service. Definitely going back.
I couldn’t write a review glowing enough to adequately hype up how incredible La Buche is. I found it by searching around for family friendly restaurants and it’s a 3 minute walk from Cheatau Frontec, where we were staying. We went on a Saturday evening and it was fairly busy but we had a nice window table right away. The host was one of the nicest people I’ve ever encountered in the restaurant industry. They didn’t have any high chairs for our 9 month old, so he sent someone to a nearby establishment to pick one up for us. He was continually coming to chat with our daughters, and even spent a minute to sit and interact with the baby. He is a true gem andI hope La Buche knows how lucky they are to have him! Our server was equally excellent. I practice French as much as possible and he was patient, answered the couple of pronunciation questions I had, and was just generally wonderful. My husband and I split a fois gras and it was excellent. I had a pork dish with puréed carrot and it was the perfect portion size. Everything was super well prepared. I forget what my husband had, the poutine perhaps? Whatever it was, he enjoyed it. And oh my goodness, the rolls are delicious. Definitely do not skip them. My daughter struggled a bit as she got the croquettes and they were very meat heavy. And she’s been on a French fry strike lately, so she ate other things off our plates and it worked out. Also definitely take a trip to the bathroom. One of the coolest restrooms I’ve ever seen.
TLDR: tourist trap. - shrimp roll: extremely rich but tasteless bun like deep fried in butter? Total 10 cold baby shrimp sizes of a small button, but the celery were so loosely chopped even same size as the shrimp? - Duck wings are amazing but they don’t seem to promote it it was a small item on the menu - maple taffy: $5 buys you a lolli with coin size and thickness
Amazing food, fantastic service and very good family friendly vibes.
Nice poutine ..
We had a wonderful experience at Le Buche. Hemy Q was our server and provided excellent service from start to finish. She was incredibly attentive to our table, very friendly, and made everyone in our party of four feel welcomed and well taken care of throughout the meal. The food here is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere is perfect for both lunch and dinner. It is a great spot for guests of all ages, making it an excellent family restaurant, while also being a fantastic choice for serious food lovers looking for authentic local Québec cuisine. Le Bûche offers the perfect combination of warm hospitality, great food, and a welcoming setting. I highly recommend it.
The service was good and the vegan option (grandpas oatmeal) they had was delicious, and a great way to highlight maple syrup. It could have easily fed two people. I’m disappointed that they serve foie gras - as it is known as very cruel and banned in over a dozen countries.
Everything tasted amazing and the ambience was very unique and traditional
Duck wings and absinthe what more could u ask for?
Lovely atmosphere and even better service!
Restaurant La Bûche was the perfect spot for our first night in Quebec. It was crowded and buzzing in the best way, with a lively, welcoming energy. The décor is campy but charming and adds to the fun, casual vibe. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and helped make the experience even better. Food highlights were the poutine with meat topping—truly excellent and addictive—the French onion soup, deer tartare, and the make‑your‑own maple taffy for dessert, which was a fun and memorable finish. The only miss was the meat pie, which I really wanted to love but found a bit too dry and could have used more broth or gravy. Overall, a lively, comforting, and very Quebecois meal that we thoroughly enjoyed.
Fun atmosphere, awesome food. Portions are huuuge. A bit pricey but worth it for getting to try quebecois food. They’re great with nut allergies!
Great food, great service!
Summary La Bûche is a nice looking place and works well for families, but the experience is strictly "one and done." While the atmosphere is excellent and the service is professional, there was nothing incredible about the visit that justifies a return trip. The Bottom Line The main issue is that the restaurant is overpriced. The food is only good to okay, and for the high cost, the quality simply isn't there. You are paying for the decor rather than the meal. Verdict I wouldn’t go again. The price point is too high for a mediocre culinary experience.
Can’t say enough great things about this place. On vacation here with my girlfriend and it was recommended to us by family and our Air BnB host as well. Audrey our server was the absolute best server ever and everything we ate was fantastic! Highly recommend the Venison Tartare and Shepards pie! T
Impeccable and a must when visiting Quebec. We took the poutine maison and Poulet Frit. Atmosphere is a bit lound but understandable as it's busy. Much recommended
Everything was great, staff super friendly, environment was super nice!
I had a great experience at La Bûche during our trip to Quebec City. It was quite busy during lunch hours, but we were seated after about 10–15 minutes, which honestly wasn’t bad considering how popular the place was. The atmosphere was one of the highlights of the visit. The restaurant has a cozy, homey feel with a classic Canadian / Québécois theme that really adds to the experience and makes it feel special for visitors. The customer service was also excellent—the staff were friendly, attentive, and able to speak both English and French, which made everything very comfortable. Everything we ordered was excellent, but the standout dishes were definitely the famous onion soup and the meat pie. Both were rich, flavorful, and felt like the perfect comfort food. The maple taffy served on a frozen plate was also such a fun and unique experience, and it added a memorable touch to our Quebec trip. I would absolutely recommend stopping by if you’re visiting the city. Recommended items: Onion Soup, Meat Pie
Great cozy atmosphere. Food was amazing
Great atmosphere and location ! Delicious traditional food!
We came here twice during our short stay in the city. That says a lot. The food was excellent, the service was friendly and attentive, and everything felt very authentic and local. Definitely worth a visit!
This was a wonderful surprise in every way, from the knowledgeable and entertaining server and overall feel of the place to the food. Especially remarkable were the deer tartare and the poor man's pudding. The tartare was the best dish we had in a full week of excellent dining in Quebec City.
Great food and service.
food is fairly expensive but it's good. really cool atmosphere and the bathrooms are awesome.
