I have been to hundreds of coffee shops across this country and Café Van Houtte has somehow managed to be the worst experience of all of them. Combined. The "barista" — and I use that term very loosely — had absolutely no clue how to pull a proper espresso shot. What arrived in my cup was an undrinkable, burnt, watery embarrassment that I wouldn't serve to someone I hate. A vending machine produces better coffee. A gas station produces better coffee. My 8-year-old nephew, on his first attempt, would produce better coffee. The manager, rather than showing any concern, was condescending, dismissive, and borderline hostile. Zero professionalism. Zero accountability. The kind of attitude that makes you wonder how this place is still open. The staff looked confused by basic requests and moved at a pace that suggested they were being paid by the hour to do as little as possible. And the prices? Absolutely criminal for what you receive. This isn't a coffee shop — it's a masterclass in how to scam customers with a smile. Do yourself a favor. Walk past this place. Keep walking. Find literally anywhere else.
Reviews / Ratings for Café Van Houtte
Came here for lunch yesterday. Found the prices very high for the amount of food you get. I ordered the broccoli soup with a croissant. Attendant was pleasant and offered to warm up the croissant. You help yourself to the cutlery and found the wood flat spoon was extremely difficult to eat the soup. I even made a point to ask if there were any other spoons available and attendant said "no, those spoons are terrible, huh"? I agreed and was left to drink the soup out of the small container. The tables were not clean and looked unappealing to sit at. There was an older man who looked like he was the owner/manager who basically tucked in chairs if they weren't, but he also had a loud ringer on his cell phone and didn't pick it up. It was extremely loud and then later was seen sitting at the rattan swing chairs and talking on his cell. This was the reason I found the service and atmosphere terrible and uninviting. It would be helpful to provide appropriate style soup spoons and maybe turn your ringer off or lower in volume if you're at work!!! It wasn't the attendant's fault if his employer provides these useless types of cutlery. Wood cutlery is environmentally wise but not if you can't eat your soup properly. Maybe take these comments seriously, they would be helpful to get better review ratings. On average a 3-star which deems accurate here. Btw, the soup was meh, a little watery with a few pieces of broccoli bits. It could be better made.
Notice the reviews aren't great, here's why, despite 4 or 5 employees the pace of the line is really slow, high prices with sloooow service! The floor and tables seemed dirty,it's 12:30 on a Saturday, they open at maybe 11? It seems no one cleaned up from yesterday, not great, the location is very good which is why people come here, for convenience
Aymen does the best white chocolate in Montreal🤩🤩
Maple latte had zero maple flavor.
I very much enjoy Van Houtte! The coffee is great and I never have any issues whichever location I go to. This shop is in an excellent spot. Maybe not so much in the winter but I did enjoy sitting inside sipping on my coffee. The only gripe I have is that the seats weren’t very clean. I had to clean off my seat before sitting down. Otherwise I enjoyed myself and I would return again. 😎👍
If you are looking for a place to grab coffee and a snack near Old Town that is simple, this works, but otherwise it's just not worth the visit.
