This was the worst coffee experience ever. They closed early do they can go watch their stupid game. Was supposed to close at 10:30 but instead at 7:30 they would not take my order. That's not professional at all.
What guests say about Café Castel
Café Castel seems to be especially appreciated for its warm, bright, and cozy atmosphere, with a pleasant decor for studying, working, or relaxing. Several reviews highlight good coffee, good croissants, and a few well-liked desserts, but also mention a menu that can sometimes be limited and prices that are seen as a bit high. The service receives both praise and criticism: some people find it very kind and attentive, while others report rudeness, slowness, and a lack of consistency.

Cute place but very disrespectful and grumpy man taking orders. Lacks respect to a lone female customer for no justified reason, never ever coming back.
A café in Montreal with a lovely view of downtown through its large glass panels and ceiling. We visited on a weekday and the queue can get long as there are only two baristas running the whole café — though we still managed to find a seat. We ordered a hot chocolate and a Brume de Castel. The drinks were okay — acceptable but nothing spectacular. You’re paying more for the scenery and cozy atmosphere, which does make up for it. With plenty of natural light, it’s a nice spot for catching up or getting some work/study/reading done.
A bit on the overpriced side and that’s to be expected considering location
The staff were SO kind and helpful when I thought I had lost my phone. I'm so grateful for their patience, generosity, and goodwill! Also the cafe is super cute and the drinks and pastries are excellent.
Always stop by here. Amazing croissants and good coffee! Definitely a vibe.
The atmosphere and overall vibe of the place are great — it has a very relaxing and comfortable feel. Unfortunately, the menu is far too limited. For someone who comes in hungry, the options are really not satisfying enough. In a city famous for its bagels, every café should have a proper bagel section with a variety of options available throughout the day. Instead, the selection here is very shallow. Savory food options are limited and not filling, while sweet items are much more common. The same goes for croissants — they should be available at all hours, which honestly is not difficult to manage. My only suggestion would be to expand and enrich the menu. Especially considering the café is located right next to a school, the current menu feels surprisingly limited.
Cozy and elegant café attached to a hotel. Plenty of natural lighting.
I didn’t like the service very much. The person who served didn’t even say hi or thank you even if I did and the dessert that I had was not great.
Coffee was meh. No latte art whatsoever despite other comments. Service is brusque and unfriendly. Espresso drinks aren’t made properly (saw a flat white that looked like a latte).
It’s close to McGill campus and has a very nice place to work, with large windows that make it very bright during the summer. Open longer than many local cafés, which is a bonus! Cakes are delicious and usually fresh. The only problem is when it gets crowded, with usually one or two staff who are both baristas and responsible for taking care of the place, you might end up with tables left unclean and no one taking the dishes or leftovers.
The cafe has a nice cozy vibe for studying or hanging out. I ordered a mocha latte but the price I paid for a medium, I expected a bit of a larger size. It's bit on the sweeter side but I like the consistency with the steamed milk. Service was alright, the guy who served me seemed a bit grumpy. At least they have a student discount which is nice.
Feels like Italy or the Provence. Excellent coffee up to best European coffee standards. Splendid service.
Went there for a coffee today with a friend, and was amazed at the service I got from Joseph. First time I meet him , and he made my day! I don’t remember the time I had such a great service and friendly chat when getting coffee . Coffee was great , the service made it excellent! Thanks Joseph
its all about the ambience, we had cocktails and they packed a punch. 😅
Great cafe to enjoy a fresh brew of coffee . Their honey Cheese cake is a must try ⭐️
Nice food, great croissants, friendly staff.
LOL the older guy working here is a ridiculous character
Ordered vanilla latte and a marble chocolate loaf. The latte was fine and the loaf was a bit dry, might have been because the place was about to close. Other than that the place is cozy to work.
Made me wakt 15 minutes for a croissant and then told me they were out. Terrible service, staff is rude. Used to be good. Go elsewherez
After placing my order, I waited about 10 minutes. When the drink was finally ready, the staff only called out the drink name without confirming the customer, and another customer took my coffee by mistake. That customer later put the item back, but the staff initially still attempted to hand the same cup to me. Although they later said they would remake the drink, the second cup was prepared much faster than the original, looked noticeably different, and no explanation was given about the preparation process. This made it impossible to confirm whether the drink was actually remade from scratch. Under these circumstances, I completely lost trust in the food safety and service procedures, so I am giving one star
A beautifully made place. It feels like sitting on a cozy street in old Europe. A little balcony with coffee cups hanging from it, a dark wooden chair, sipping coffee while watching a busy Montreal street go by. They have sweet, as well as non-sweet options
A cozy place with delicious tiramisu. I went there with my friend on her graduation day, and when the owner found out, he kindly gave us a discount for the occasion. Thank you so much!💛
Very cozy, a bit dark, and tad out of style. Ordered a simple chai latte, stayed for over an hour was not bothered. Someone that seemed like a teacher was correcting/ writing down stuff. Idk its giving that one line in "La Boheme". Intrigued enough to try it again. Might be a sublime spot if Students actually dont still know about it. The real struggle of any cafe enjoyer is needing space and the place being too popular/crowded so you cant stay too long. Idk this brought back memories.
Really nice cafe! Love the setting it’s very open and bright. Delicious matcha latte and loaf.
