Food was delicious, no problem there. But bad service ruins everything. Sat outside, 7 tables, no waiter for twenty plus minutes. Took an hour and a half after initial chips/salsa to order food. No refills, no eye contact when they would walk around. Recommend hard pass and keep walking to the restaurants in old town.
What guests say about Bar et Restaurant La Catrina - Vieux-Port
Opinions are mixed, with a decent overall average but many customers loving the tacos, tableside guacamole, and cocktails. The atmosphere is often described as pleasant, and the service can be very friendly when the team is on point. On the other hand, several comments mention very long waits, inconsistent service, and sometimes disappointing or cold dishes. It’s an interesting option for the atmosphere and drinks, but you have to accept service that can be slow at times.

Service honestly was not it, 30 minutes wait after we finished
I'm not one to leave bad reviews but our experience at La Catrina was the first to push us to do so. Came for dinner during F1 weekend and it was probably the worst dining experience we have ever had. This place is severely understaffed. I cannot understand why you allow a full house while staffing so few. It was to the point where our waitress was doing dishes between serving tables... For much of the evening, it felt like we were forgotten about. It took us nearly two hours to receive our order of street corn and tacos. By the time we got our food, it was cold. My partner actually saw that our food was sitting under a heat lamp for almost 20 minutes, but due to staffing, it wasn't actually served. The food itself was extremely basic and not representative of the prices charged. With only limited time to spend in Montreal, it was an unfortunate decision to decide to come here. The wait for our food ended up killing our plans for the evening. Would not recommend.
Had the best time here. First, the Al Pastor Tacos are simply delicious. Everything is on point with the flavours. Our service was also fantastic! Kind staff, very classy as well. Highly recommend.
More than half the meat in my al pastor tacos was pure thick blubbery fat that I couldnt chew or swallow. I never seen anything like that. I tried swallowing a bit but it made me gag… its like if someone accidentally took the fat scraps bowl and served it to me…
Hajar was a great host and gave us a 5 stars service. We enjoyed her conversation. Food was great and price is reasonable. Try Mohamara you will never regret it!
Food was very good - however, service was horrendous. For reference, waited 30 minutes to be seated, waited 30-40 minutes for our order to be taken. Following the waiter taking our order, it took about an hour to see the appetizers and drinks we ordered. We didn’t get our main entrees for about 2 hours after we were sat. When I asked about the delay, was told the restaurant was very busy but the wait times are inexcusable. The restaurant didn’t seem too busy to warrant a 3 hour wait time end to end. All in all, food was good but don’t go there expecting to dine and leave within a 1-1.5 hour timeline. Plan to call PTO and block your calendar for a couple of days if you want to eat here.
I loved the tacos and the atmosphere!
My friends and I really enjoyed our time here.🫶🏽
Beautiful view, but that’s where the good part ended. The guacamole was completely bland, and the chips tasted bitter like they were fried in old oil that had been reused too many times. The tacos were horrible too: tiny tortillas overloaded with meat, making them impossible to eat properly, and somehow still bland. Drinks were okay, but definitely not enough to make up for the food. Would not recommend.
Went here for a quick drink and dinner with my friend! Super cool ambience -there’s a downstairs where the bar is, that has a speakeasy type vibe and a massiveee terrace - cant wait to try it out this summer! Our waitress was Lili - she was super sweet, and made me a great mocktail! Unfortunately there were some other clients in the restaurant that were mistreating her and even began to raise their voices (embarrassing for grown women) but Lili remained calm and handled the situation well despite their bad attitudes. Woukd recommend to give it a go this summertime!!
The food was not great, we ordered fried chicken tacos and it was smelling like fish , and we asked if the fish and chicken fried in same oil and utensil and they were like yes, I mean who does that Very disappointing. We couldn’t taste the chicken it was like fish. They really need to fix this. Cocktails were good.
Saturday. May 9, 2026, 3pm. I understand that Saturday's can be busy on a nice sunny day, but it appears the staff of kitchen may have been overwhelmed with people who were out enjoying the day. Although it wasn't I early busy. Long wait for beverages, ok with that. Long wait for food that when it did arrive, the fish tacos were ice cold, and overcooked. The beef was just average. For an appetizer, two orders of tacos (3 each), coke and glass of wine, the 105.00 bill (incl tip) was alot to pay for what we referred to "angry food," I had read such good things about to this place and hope to this was just an episode of a hiccup as things are getting ready for the summer season.
Came last night for drinks-only following dinner. Waitress’s energy was sour upon arrival. There was a thick smoky smell (from food) and we asked if being seated downstairs or outside were options. The tone of her response was curt. Later, when we were trying to get our check to go, we tried politely getting her attention as she went past us several times. She turned around and shouted “I heard you! OK!” In an extremely rude tone. It was highly unnecessary. She could have apologized and taken accountability but she doubled down on her response and a tense exchange ensued. WOULD NOT recommend. 3 Amigos nearby was a MUCH better experience if you’re looking for Mexican food.
Drinks were good. But I can find good drinks anywhere in Montreal. My issue with this place was the service was poor and the attitude of the waitress was beyond rude. Do yourself a favor and go to Nomai, which is next door. If you’re in the mood for Mexican, visit Three Amigos on Rue Saint Jacques which is within walking distance and where they have great food and amazing service!
Food was absolutely amazing. Guacamole made tableside, delicious tacos, and an awesome quesadilla. My friend and I could have shared either the tacos or the quesadilla and it would have been plenty to eat after the guacamole. The cocktails were exquisite—Mexican Mule and French 75. I marked it down just a bit in service because the woman who took our drink order never returned and after about half an hour we got the waiter’s attention to order our food. Also the atmosphere was mostly good but it’s very small and kind of noisy. I would go back again in a heartbeat for the food and drink!
The drinks were genuinely good, which is the only reason this isn’t one star. Service was a different story. We tried multiple times to get our server’s attention and were ignored. When she finally came over, she yelled at us. When we raised it while paying, her response was that she yelled because we had been yelling at her, which was not true. We were not raising our voices at any point. Mistakes happen in service, and a simple acknowledgment would have gone a long way. Being yelled at and then accused of the same behavior is not how you treat a paying customer. I’d come back for the drinks if the service were different, but based on this experience I can’t recommend it.
Best mexican food in the city! Fantastic service and even better spicy mango margaritas. The crispy chicken tacos are phenomenal!! Have been countless times.
Beautiful little spot! The food (birria and al pastor tacos) and margs were delicious! Great friendly and quick service!
I tried this spot this past Sunday, and I have to say the only memorable thing about this place was the service. The food is subpar quite frankly. Thank you Valentina for making the evening so special.
If I could rate a -1 star I would… we ordered the molcajete mixto (the pic below) and it literally had 2 small pieces of meat, 2 shrimps and 2 small pieces of chicken -> 75$ just the plate… and that’s not the worse part… When we ordered, the server let us know we would wait 45min, so we order a starter to wait for the main dish. It didn’t take 45min, not 1h, not 1.30 but a full 2h… (yes it got to that point that i put a chrono on them because the wait was ridiculous) And honestly I would have waited that long if the food was wow but it was mid. Very average. the service was very slow… Maybe the tacos are good… but the Guacamole and the molcajete mixto are not worth your time or your money…. Cocktails are good. Margarita was very good.
We like the place, in general is good!
