Yen Cuisine Japonaise is a reliable downtown spot that sits between casual sushi joint and mid-range dining. The food is consistently solid—fresh fish, well-presented plates, and a menu that blends traditional Japanese dishes with slightly more modern, fusion-style options. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, making it a good choice for a relaxed dinner or date, though it can get a bit noisy at peak hours. Service is generally friendly and efficient, but not always perfectly consistent. Bottom line: A dependable, well-executed Japanese restaurant with good quality and ambiance—worth it for a casual dinner downtown, even if it’s not at the top tier of Montreal’s sushi scene.

I was really happy to secure a table four weeks in advance—the online reservation system is excellent and easy to use. When our party arrived (we had a 12:45 PM reservation on Easter Monday), we were warmly welcomed and promptly seated. The service stood out right away. Our host/server was professional and attentive; when one member of our group couldn’t order a dish as listed, he quickly suggested an alternative accompaniment and kindly apologized. We didn’t expect that but my party really appreciated the degree of professionalism and the establishment! Although the portions were a bit smaller than expected, the food was clearly made fresh to order, and the flavors complemented each other beautifully. Overall: 10/10 for food, 10/10 for service, and 10/10 for atmosphere. Honestly, 100/10—I’d happily come back again on a lunch break from the nearby university.
If you're looking for good poke/sushi downtown then this is a safe bet. Had the tuna tataki, spicy tuna poke bowl and the unagi don and they were all quite good. The ambience and decor are quite nice as well. Good for a date night without having to break the bank.
The food tasted just as fresh and flavorful as it looked and we absolutely loved the cozy ambiance of the restaurant.
The freshest fish and seafood sashimi. Best hamachi I have ever had. The salmon tartar on crispy salmon skin was exceptional. The tofu miso soup, shrimp tempura and takoyaki were very good. Friendly and calm service. Warm decor.
I ordered Karrage and some sushi for takeout, the Karrage was completely dry and cold as if they were sitting in their kitchen for days. Got the salmon kawa with tartare, very average as well. Won’t be coming back.
the freshest sushi I have ever eaten, highly recommend!
This was very good. I loved it. And the warm Saké was spool good
Excellent Japanese fresh plates, with fish, seafood and vegetables. All plates are presented beautifully. Relaxed, friendly vibe.
I've passed this place so many times without entering. Finally I went with a friend and we fell in love with the place. The service was kind and friendly, the atmosphere unique and cozy, and the food was great and reasonably priced. We'll be returning.

Cute spot, the food is delicious and honestly affordable for that level of quality! Servers were super sweet :) I recommend!
I discovered this hidden gem - the food is delicious, the atmosphere is cozy and the service is great. Cute spot not too expensive if you like Japanese food.
Customer service is fantasic! Food is served quickly and always fresh. It’s a consistently enjoyable spot, whether you’re a regular or hosting visitors from out of town - they always leave impressed.
I Loved the decoration with old Japanese magazines and the ambient is cozy and warm. The service staff are kind too. The food is good and portions medium-big.
Had foie gras with bbq eel on rice … definitely a 5 star dish, highly recommended.
