Clean, pleasant. Had a dim sum lunch special
Reviews / Ratings for ShangHai Grill
This place was our go-to Chinese takeout spot when I was a kid (it used to be called Chine Toque). I have been back a few times over the years and consistently have a pretty decent meal. Prices are fair and you get a soup, an appetizer, and a main dish with a side of white rice. Unfortunately tonight I had a very mediocre meal there. The soup was okay and the peanut butter dumplings too, but the main dishes, chicken with crispy spinach and general tao's chicken were both honestly really bad. They used to be predictably delicious with lots of sauce and tons of flavour. Tonight the general tao's was basically chunky fried matter with some overcooked chicken inside and a small pool of sauce underneath. The chicken and spinach looked great, but the chicken, which was doused in sauce, was tasteless. The crispy wantons they serve at the beginning were served with a little dipping cup of ketchup. Finally, i don't know where they are sourcing their fortune cookies, but these are obviously the cheapest things on the market, they have the texture and sheen of product packaging. I am disappointed since I am so used to getting a tasty and consistent meal at Shanghai Grill. There is a possibility we will give it another chance but definitely not anytime soon.
Very good experience overall. Generous portions with rice, appetiser, and sides included — great value for money. Service was polite and quick, and the restaurant is clean and wheelchair accessible. Some dishes could have had stronger flavours, but still a solid spot, especially for vegetarian and vegan options. 📸 Follow us on Instagram @mtlrestaurantcritique for more reviews
