I had Lobster risotto and Beef braisee. Lobster maybe cooked too long, it was so hard. Beef braisee was ok nothing special. I would not repeat for dinner. Servers were very nice. Beautiful restaurant it was.
What guests say about Restaurant Henri
Restaurant Henri receives plenty of praise for its elegant ambiance, tasteful decor, and often warm atmosphere, making it ideal for a meal for two, brunch, or dinner with friends. Many customers also highlight attentive service and well-prepared dishes, with frequent mentions of the overall quality of the food and drinks. On the other hand, a few reviews mention inconsistent service, long waits, portions seen as small, and prices perceived as high for what is offered. In short, the place can be very appealing for its atmosphere and a more refined experience, but it seems less consistent when the service or execution falls short.
Reviews / Ratings for Restaurant Henri
I recently visited this restaurant with my boyfriend. While the food was excellent and we really enjoyed our meal, the service was disappointing, especially considering the restaurant’s reputation and pricing. Our server seemed inattentive and came across as somewhat rude. One thing that stood out was that he checked on other tables to ask how their food was, but never did the same for us. As younger customers, it gave us the impression that we were being treated differently, which felt unprofessional and disappointing. The quality of the food was outstanding, but the level of service did not match the overall dining experience I would expect from a restaurant of this caliber.
The restaurant is very classy, our waitress Simone was fantastic. We took our time and enjoyed our brunch. The only comment I can have us that if each poached egg in the Benedict can have it's own bread. Found myself having a hard time getting the bechanel and egg yolk sopped up. See picture.
We enjoyed a few drinks at the bar Saturday night before heading to a concert on the island and the cocktails were fantastic. We then ate breakfast here Sunday morning before checking out of the hotel, and it was enjoyable. The Henri breakfast dish was a plentiful portion. We had both a young lady and a gentleman attend to our table and they were friendly. The hostess on the other hand was not friendly. She was quite cold towards us as guests. It would have been nice to be greeted at a more upscale restaurant like this. At least a smile would be nice when you are the first face we see when arriving to the restaurant! The menu prices are a little steep but we expected this as it’s a restaurant at an upscale hotel. The ambiance was also nice here, especially in the evening hours.
Carl B was the the most awful server ever! He was rude and delayed in putting our meals in on purpose. We had to flag him down continuously.... he was attentive until we were not going to get a bottle of wine...... then just rude…I will never go back or recommend this place. As for the food asked for my near to be cooked medium.... it was well done. Nibbled at it at best.... because I did not want to wait another 30-45 min to get another meal prepared. It was not very busy in there when we got there. Several of his other tables arrived after us and had gotten their food and were almost finished eating before ours even arrived.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ — A Beautiful Setting That Almost Delivers Henri is one of those restaurants where the atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting — and rightfully so. Housed in the landmark Birks Building in the heart of downtown Montreal, the dining room is spacious, bright, and elegantly decorated in 19th-century French brasserie style — genuinely impressive, especially for a visitor. Service was attentive and warm throughout, which made the experience pleasant from start to finish. On the food side, a clear highlight was the salad with goat cheese, orange, and beetroot — beautifully balanced, fresh, and exactly what you’d hope for from a French brasserie. The burger was solid — well-prepared, nothing to complain about. The fries, however, could use some work on the crispiness front — but as any traveller across Canada quickly discovers, truly crispy fries seem to be a rare find coast to coast. Overall, Henri is a great spot for the atmosphere and selected dishes. Worth a visit if you’re downtown — just temper expectations on the sides
It was a real delight, the food was magnificent and for once in that kind of place portions we're huge! The squid was superbly grilled so it was tender and savory, the steak was cooked to perfection and with blue cheese it was a perfect meal. My only concern would be that the service was a bit amateur while usually these places have a staff of seasoned servers some of them looked a bit loss and even if the place was not even half packed we had to wait for service. But a minor concern for this beautiful place in downtown Montreal
Beautiful restaurant with nice decoration and ambiance. The service was excellent. Best Caesar salad ever had. Ribeye and Salmon were excellent. Chocolate cake with ice cream was delicious. Highly recommended for a romantic dinner.
Decadent and bougie. An indescribable experience, except, I just described it in two words! If you've got a few bucks laying around, you could spend it on worse things, just saying!
The restaurant is an impressive nod to old-world elegance and fine dining. We chose it to celebrate an important occasion and had been looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately, service from the kitchen was inconsistent throughout the evening. Dishes arrived at different times, and one entrée was completely different from what had been ordered. That said, the food itself was very well prepared and genuinely delicious. The escargot and octopus appetizers were standouts and are absolutely worth recommending. What happened afterwards, however, overshadowed the entire evening. While waiting for dessert, I saw a rat scurry across the dining room floor toward the corner table near the entrance. Naturally, we were alarmed and immediately picked our bags up off the floor. We discreetly asked to speak with the manager, Maxim, because we genuinely felt the restaurant should be made aware immediately and given the opportunity to address the situation appropriately and quietly. What shocked us even more than the rat itself was the response. There was no apology, no concern, and no sense of urgency. Instead, Maxim became defensive and raised his voice during the interaction. When I mentioned that I intended to share the experience publicly, he dismissively told me to “go right ahead” and implied that we were looking for a discount — something we neither requested nor hinted at. At that point, I simply paid the bill and left. No follow-up apology was offered for either the incident itself or the way the situation was handled. A restaurant associated with the Birks name carries an expectation of professionalism, hospitality, and excellence. Sadly, the management response we experienced reflected none of those qualities. For context, our bill was north of $800 so it was not an inexpensive evening. I did report the incident to the hotel’s night manager afterward and hope the matter is taken seriously. The food may be very good, but diners should be aware that the overall experience fell far below the standard one would reasonably expect from an establishment of this reputation. No food in the world is worth dealing with a manager such at Maxim or contracting the Hanta virus!
Elegant European brasserie with great food, live dj (but subtle music) and amazing service.
One of Montreal's Best. In the center of Montreal. In Phillips Sq. It's located in a 5 star boutique hotel.
Overall it was a nice meal. Can't really complain but just not something I can give a 5 star too. Our waiter was not the friendliest to english speaking people. Meal was so so.
I brought an important client here for lunch, hoping for a polished meal in a professional setting. The restaurant presents itself as refined, and given the prices, I expected the kind of experience where the food, service, and overall execution would match the atmosphere. Unfortunately, the lunch turned into one of the most unpleasant dining experiences I have had. I ordered the Saumon fumé maison as an hors d’oeuvre and the Contre-filet AAA as my main. From the beginning, something felt off. The food had a strange smell, particularly the fish, but I tried to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. In hindsight, I should have trusted my instincts, especially after noticing repeated lineups for the bathroom during the meal. That is not exactly the kind of ambience you want when trying to impress someone who flew in from New York for a business meeting. Shortly after eating, both my client and I became extremely sick. What was meant to be a serious lunch to help move a deal forward quickly became uncomfortable and embarrassing. My client ended up missing her return flight because she was too unwell to travel, which made the situation even worse. It is hard to overstate how damaging that is when you are trying to host someone professionally. There was almost a tragic comedy to it, in the most unfortunate way possible. I came in hoping to discuss business over a nice meal, and instead I spent the afternoon apologizing while both of us regretted every decision that led us there. What a disaster! For a restaurant at this level, this was completely unacceptable. The setting may be elegant, but the food quality and aftermath were not. I would honestly have been better off taking my client to Tim Hortons. At least then the expectations would have been clear, and the damage to both our stomachs and the business relationship may have been less severe. I will not be returning, and I would strongly caution anyone considering this restaurant for a business lunch, client meeting, or important occasion.
Atmosphere and location were extra ordinary. Food wise I was disappointed with my chicken and waffles because while the syrup was advertised as maple syrup, at best it was corn syrup which almost ruined the dish. Not only is it false advertising but an insult because Quebec is the world’s major producer of maple syrup. Please do better!!
We were there for drinks and tiredly loved this spot.
This restaurant was amazing. Great staff, excellent customer service. Our host/waiter was Kadeem! He was phenomenal. He was very knowledgeable with the right wine pair for the meals, his recommendations for entrée were spot on. Every selection looked amazing and fulfilling. I recommend this restaurant and if you get Kadeem as your wait staff consider you night a plus and complete 😉 😀
Excellent service , for the most part (until my coffee was forgotten and we had to ask for it twice). Can’t give it 5 stars for food though. It was good don’t get me wrong, but not 5 star good. A little overpriced for what we had. Steak tartare was meh…not much flavor, as was the crab cake. 3 people for dinner, entrees, cocktails, dinner and dessert with one bottle wine cost me 625$. This place had been on my list to try for a while. Glad I went but don’t know if I’d go back.
Good food. Nice setting in old Birks store. Can get noisy for a business lunch. Service typically good. Nice crowd.
I do not typically write reviews of restaurants, but I felt particularly implored to do so after experiencing such terrible service. To save my time as well as anyone reading, I'll simply put it in bullet form. -Food was quite good, but lacking in quantity. 22ish dollars for a slice of French toast is almost criminal. -Service was molasses-like slow and for the most part non- existent. It took the entire duration of the meal to get a refill of water. Zero attention to detail. -The Maître d, Maxime, was not warm at all, where I felt almost like a second class citizen, seeing other clients being served even if they had ordered after us. We ordered a salad and a French toast respectively, but a whole table of 4 was served their hot meals well before ours. -Care was not consistent as the table beside us had the courtesy of regular coffee and water refills. -Less than stellar seating even when there was ample room in the restaurant. Save your time and money.
I used to adore this place, but my recent visit was a letdown after a considerable absence. On December 31st, 2023, I visited for brunch with my significant other, anticipating a great experience. While the waiter was amiable and described the food options well, the actual meal left much to be desired. For starters, we had 6 fresh oysters and a delightful soup. However, our usual order of eggs benedict with smoked salmon and the hanger steak was shockingly disappointing. Despite previous satisfying visits, the quality, portion size, and presentation were all notably subpar this time. Unfortunately, I didn't take photos to illustrate. The eggs benedict arrived on small yellow bread with the salmon scattered around the plate, lacking the usual salad and appearing notably smaller. It felt like a fraction of what they used to serve and resembled something from an average all-inclusive hotel in Cuba. The hanger steak, ordered medium rare, arrived overcooked and resembling a brick. The fries were flavorless and overdone, a far cry from what one might expect. I returned it, opting for my usual steak tartare, but to my dismay, that too was disappointing - dry and lacking in taste, with an unappealing presentation. When I inquired about the drastic change in quality, the manager informed me they had changed chefs. While I refrained from stating it, it seemed apparent they should consider replacing the new chef swiftly. Even the dishes served to others nearby lacked appeal. The manager offered three small pastries to compensate for the inconvenience. Considering the $200 CAD bill (inclusive of a surprising $66 for two glasses of champagne, totaling $87 with tax and tip), it felt inadequate. Montreal boasts numerous exceptional brunch spots, and unfortunately, this one won't make it back on my list unless I hear promising reviews in the future. I give it 1 star for price vs quality.
Excellent meal. Started with cocktails (souvenir and epiceree) - both were top shelf. Steaks for two family members (ribeye was extremely flavourful; filet mignon was tender as expected). Other members had the the sea bass and the salmon - also expertly finished. Everything was plated well and was accompanied by equally good sides. Desserts were top notch. Highly recommend!
Always amazing food, drinks and atmosphere @ Henri
Kind of disappointed. Was really looking forward to eating here. We were a group celebrating a birthday. Food was overall good, some dishes better than others. My braised beef was good but not anything to write home about. Service was friendly and very attentive at first, but quickly tapered off. We were waiting forever for dessert. When it came time to pay, the server demanded a minimum of 18%, which I was going to do anyways, but the way this was broached could have been done more elegantly. We were a group, so as is typical, were the last ones to leave. When retrieving our coats from the coat check, the servers just took them all and plunked them on the desk so we felt very rushed. I understand they want to go home, but there are better ways to communicate that message.. The venue is beautiful but the restaurant seems to just be missing a few key details to be excellent.
Everything was perfect
