Service was a slow, took almost 30 minutes for our food while the other people there were mainly just getting drinks. They only refilled our water once. The food was good and the portions were good, but after I paid the bill I didn’t give a tip as I am on a surprise vacation with my partner and we are going through stressful times especially financially and this server with long black hair in a bun(?) started yelling at me in front of everyone including my partner, staff and customers and then told me that if I can’t afford to tip then go to McDonald’s and he hopes I never come back. Completely unacceptable. I’ve worked in retail as well and I am aware that tips are completely optional, but he wasn’t even the server who was originally serving me. All he did was bring the food, another server did everything else, yet he wanted the tip for himself. Good food but the wait time was unnecessary and the attitude was appalling. This is also my first time in Montreal and I had no idea how tip culture was here. Now I know. Incredibly childish and disrespectful. Just because I can’t afford a tip for the service doesn’t mean I can’t make the best of my vacation however I can, and I apologized multiple times for coming off as ungrateful but where I’m from (Vancouver) tipping is always optional, and we don’t just yell at people and have tantrums. Do better.
