What a great experience. From food service and atmosphere. We received just fabulous service from our waiter Alex and had the pleasure to meet the owner Luis. I recommend this restaurant and will be back again soon. 10/10
What guests say about Porto Mar Restaurant
Porto Mar Mar in Montreal is generally much appreciated for its warm service, welcoming atmosphere, and authentic Portuguese style. Several customers highlight flavorful seafood and fish, portions that are sometimes generous, and good value for money with the table d’hôte. A few reviews do mention small portions, prices seen as high, and, more rarely, uneven service or quality.

We had a wonderful experience. The servers were very friendly and the food was delicious 😋. The kitchen is open so we were able to see the chef and sous chef cooking everything. The chef even came to our table to greet us and ask how we enjoyed our meals. The octopus was our favorite. Cooked perfectly and so tasty. The poncha on their signature cocktail menu was strong but very good. From what I understand it's a traditional recipe from the island of Madeira. Overall a wonderful evening. We will definitely be back. Thank you :)
I had an amazing night at Porto Mar with my family. The restaurant had a great vibe , the service was great and most importantly the food was amazing. I never write reviews for restaurants but I felt like had to because of this unforgettable experience!
Wow ! I had an amazing night at Porto Mar. I received amazing service from our waiter Alex. We took the turbot and the rack of lambs which were both delicious. We will definitely be back !
Don't waste your money there **Update as confused by owner's response on my review, went to check their Facebook page to understand a little more and I can't believe that they are playing victim due to my review on my experience at the resto. Not all the reviews can be 5 stars, I love Portuguese food and that was not a good experience at that restaurant for various reasons. Saying my one star is due to their dispute is ridiculous, especially that after reading the details of this said dispute i wish i could put -5 due to lack of professionalism. Maybe you should stop blaming your neighbors for everything and start doing some introspection and work on your behavior***
We had an absolutely amazing dining experience—truly beyond expectations! Chef Louis’s catch of the day and seafood risotto were incredibly delicious. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. My child enjoyed the meal so much and left completely satisfied! Alex made the evening even more memorable. He was warm, cheerful, and full of great recommendations. His sense of humor and engaging personality made the whole dinner feel relaxed and joyful. A seamless blend of thoughtful cuisine and impeccable service—truly a place worth returning to.
Great food.
Porto Mar is a true Old Montreal classic — an upscale yet cozy Portuguese seafood restaurant that has been around for over 20 years, and it still delivers the same quality and authenticity it’s known for. It’s the perfect spot for family dinners, after‑work meals, or bringing someone you want to impress. The atmosphere is warm and elegant, and the menu is a seafood lover’s dream. They offer a vast selection of fresh options, including several catch‑of‑the‑day dishes that highlight just how high‑quality their ingredients are. The food has that refined, comforting feel that makes you instantly understand why this place has lasted so long. The fish and seafood rice was exactly as I remembered it from years ago — rich, flavorful, and reminiscent of true homemade Portuguese cooking. Others at the table ordered the sardines, which were big, bold, and full of flavor, exactly the way proper Portuguese sardines should be. We chose the table d’hôte, which is absolutely worth it. For just a little more, you get an appetizer and dessert. The chorizo and cod croquettes were delicious, and the desserts were a perfect finish. The lemon mousse surprised everyone — even someone who normally avoids lemon loved it — and the chocolate mousse was rich and satisfying. They also offer a signature cocktail menu, adding a classy touch to the whole experience. Overall, Porto Mar is a hidden gem in the Old Port that continues to impress after all these years. Authentic cuisine, fresh seafood, warm service, and a timeless atmosphere. I would 100% come back. Really super meal and great service. Table d’hote menu was great value. Would definitely recommend 🤩
We had an amazing experience at Porto Mar. The the fish and rice dish felt like real home cooking and sardines were super flavorful (in the best, authentic way). We had a starter of chorizo was also a standout. The table d’hôte is definitely worth it. For just a few dollars more you get a starter, a generous main meal, and dessert. We tried the chocolate mousse and frozen lemon dessert (highly recommended). It was the perfect finish! For a spot in Old Montreal, the prices are very fair, portions are big, and the atmosphere is relaxed—great for a date night or just a nice meal out. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, making it a great spot for a date night, tourists exploring Old Montreal, or really anyone who loves Portuguese food, whether it’s seafood or meat. The service was fantastic, and we even had the chance to meet the owners, who were some of the kindest and most welcoming people you could hope to meet. We highly recommend this place! It's a gem.
Went here last night in the Old Port and had such a great experience at Porto Mar. You need to check them out ASAP! Our server Alex was super chill and attentive, and one of the owners, Melanie, came by and was incredibly kind. We even got the chance to speak with the chef, which made the whole experience feel really personal. Food-wise, everything was fresh and full of flavor. The spicy shrimp were a standout so delicious, I’d go back just for those. I had the turbot (yes, it’s a real fish 😂) and it was cooked perfectly. The potatoes on the side were also amazing. We also had a seafood medley with rice (loaded with clams, mussels, shrimp, salmon, cod basically everything) and it was super saucy and satisfying. Drinks were on point too loved my old fashioned. To finish, we had a porto-braised pear with ice cream and it was honestly the perfect dessert. Beautiful location, especially if you can grab a window seat. Definitely a spot we’ll be going back to.
Wonderful find! Friendly and welcoming staff. Food was delicious. We had the grilled octopus and the turbo fish. Both were very tasty and the grilled sardines were delicious. Great house wine too. We will be back! Obrigado!
Celina is an amazing hostess, server, she makes your evening special. Thd food is authentic and wonderful. The ambiance is 100 % old Montréal. Parking can be challenging but it is worth it
5 little grilled shrimp around a stack of rice for $34 bucks, eh. The balsamic snails were good, but the grilled sardines were a little fishy and we left hungry. Nice ambiance and service though. From what I hear, family owned.
We are a three-generation family of 7 who dined here on New Years Eve. We had an awesome experience. The restaurant served a pre-fixed menu and obviously planned to serve us from 8:00-midnight. They provided noisemakers and hats, wonderful food and an inviting atmosphere. The table was set against a lovely window in a semi-private space, making it easy for my hard-of-hearing father to hear. Our server, Alex, was attentive and professional with just the right hint of warmth. We creating a lasting memory of sharing a special NYE together with the help of the staff at Porto Mar. Thank you for your care for us!
We had a great time, the food was excellent and our server was excellent. We will be back.
