One of my favorite Chinese restaurants! My go-to dishes are the fish in spicy fermented cabbage broth, fish-fragrant shredded pork, house spicy chicken, and the Northeastern glass noodle salad. If you enjoy spicy food, do yourself a favor and order the fish in spicy fermented cabbage broth—it’s absolutely amazing and won’t disappoint!

I've ordered from them 3x now and I'm always left satisfied. My favorites are the Japanese tofu with eggplant, so frickin good and comforting! The shrimp and egg fried rice is also so very delicious!

Update (20260321): Quality seems to have dropped IMO. All three of my dishes came and were subpar, boring and a disapointment. Friends. I sent to the restaurant had a similar reaction too. Which is too bad. Used to be my fav pace. Dropping from a 4 star to a 3 star. :/ Oh Hong Mere, where have you been... and why did it take so long for us to meet...erm... yeah, stick to a review.. ok, GTC (yeah, you know what I mean) is not too saucy, crispy and just daaaamn good. The veg menu has MANY nice options rather than just the filler classics. Some spicy fish soup? Yup. They got that too. I ordered delivery and my order came in good time and was nice and hot. No complaints really. Will for sure order from here when I need me some GTC loving. The restaurant has been fully renovated and looks amazing! Love it!

Accidentally pass by this place, menu made me go in for a bite The flavour actually quite impressive 😊very authentic Chinese dishes but also accommodating to some local palate 😌 Ordered the braised pork with quill egg + spicy cabbage, very satisfied with the taste Would probably come back and try some more dishes 😌

Food was very good, it was just unfortunate that the serving of said food ruined the entire experience. We were a group of 6, we all ordered wonton soups which came together then when it came time to the main meal, 3 plates arrived while 3 other plates only arrived 30 minutes later. It appears as though once we notified the staff we were missing food is when they started making it. On top of that, one of the missing plates was rice that was supposed to go with a plate of meat which came early. When we asked for perhaps complimentary wonton soups ($3.75) due to the poor service, they declined and said that is simply how they operate; the chef waits for orders of a certain dish to come in so they can make it in bulk. So general Tao came first because a lot of people ordered it, but pad Thai came 30 minutes later because we had to wait for more tables to order it? In writing this review I’m becoming more frustrated that I’m lowering the rating because that is simply not how you run a restaurant.

I see that a few people had issues with incorrect, too high bills. It seems to be either a method or somebody preparing the bill has severe dyscalculia. I almost paid 129.50$ for a take out of one dish. Pay attention! Food is too greasy for my taste and too expensive for what it is.

Hong Mère is amazing. I went with a group for a Wok cooking masterclass and we watched and learned as Chef Yu WOKed us through 11 dishes from his menu. We learned how to choose a wok and if we chose cast iron, how to season it for non-stick cooking. Then he showed us how he prepares, cooks and plates 11 different dishes. The attention to every detail and his mastery of North-Eastern Chinese and Szechuan cuisine is astonishing. This is no assembly line. Every dish is cooked from scratch. My favourites were the Japanese tofu and Salt & Pepper shrimp, and spicy fish soup and crispy chicken...actually EVERYTHING is amazing. Family owned and operated...THIS is best of Montreal Chinese. And chef Yu wants to help people with limited exposure to discover AUTHENTIC Chinese. So ask about an alternative to General Tao and the other typical fare. You are going to be shocked at what you experience. I am going to make a video and attach it to this post late March 2026.

Delicious northern Chinese dishes, with varied flavours and spicing, with occasional accents of Szechewan peppers. The owners, including their professionally trained chef son, were welcoming and try hard to please (MSG: yes or no, your choice.) The house specialty chicken legs and the ginger pork were memorable. Try the twice fried shrimps as well, you will likely not be disappointed if you like tempuras. A favourite vegetable dish was the spicy cauliflower.
