Review summary

What guests say about Oncle Lee Kăo

A highly appreciated Asian-fusion restaurant in Montreal, praised for its flavorful, creative, and generous cuisine, with several mentions of the 5-spice duck platter, spicy noodles, and papaya salad. Service is often described as excellent, attentive, and welcoming, and the atmosphere is festive, elegant, or ideal for going out with friends or as a couple. A few reviews note that the music is a bit too loud and the tables are close together, while a few customers find some dishes or the service rules a little unclear. Overall, it is a highly recommended spot, especially if you enjoy sharing dishes and cocktails.

The low rating is strictly related to the food. The service was great and our waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable. The food quality, taste and preparation were subpar for a restaurant of this level. The meats were extremely saucy, everything was overly oily and frankly half the time I couldn’t tell what I was eating from a flavor perspective. I’m simply adding this review to share our point of view. We decided to come here because of the positive reviews and our experience was completely different.

Lovely servers who were very helpful. We had the Octopus skewers, the S&S Eggplant, the Duck platter and the Crispy chow mein. A minor mishap and they quickly took care of it. Great service, low key atmosphere. Be aware that the restaurant has stairs at the entry as well as 2 stairs up/down to the bathroom for those with mobility difficulties.

The food was okay. I didn’t find it special enough to justify the price. The menu descriptions make the dishes sound more flavorful and exciting than they actually were. I went in with an open mind and was genuinely looking forward to trying the food, but the flavors ended up being fairly average. I think my expectations may have been too high. The service was good, and our waitress was kind and attentive. The atmosphere is beautiful and well-designed. One thing I found extremely strange was the presentation of one of the dishes. It was served on crumpled paper, which honestly made me feel like I was eating out of a shoebox. It felt a bit odd and took away from the overall dining experience.

Service and atmosphere were incredible, food was incredible! Highly recommend this place for everyone, they were very accommodating for dietary restrictions and chef Andy came to the table so we could thank him. Can't wait to go back and try more dishes, yummmmmmmmm

Not huge portions but good to share, mapo tofu a bit spicy but nothing crazy. Great service and environment, food pretty good but I’m just not crazy about it.

Server was very nice but the restaurant rules were a bit confusing, we were told it was a paced/multiple courses type place, then were asked if we wanted all the dishes at once instead. Atmosphere was nice, not too loud, cool Asian decor, music was fun but sounded Latin rather than Asian (all good, just not themed). Food was below my expectations for the price. Lamb skewers, wonton soup, spicy noodles, were all good food, but not good Chinese food. The flavor of the lamb and noodles specifically were missing the Asian spice style I’m used to. I was hoping for more Din Tai Fung style food. What sealed the 3 star was not taking Amex, no reason not to do so in a major city while charging $100+ per table imho, not a small enough business to be skirting CC fees.

Had a wonderful experience at Oncle Lee Kao Restaurant tonight. I reserved the restaurant for a surprise anniversary celebration for more than 40 guests, and from the very first email to the end of the evening, everything was impeccable. The team made the entire planning process so simple and stress-free. They thought of every detail, even the smallest ones, and were incredibly accommodating throughout. A huge thank you to the amazing staff, especially Marie, Jean-Français, Nora and more (as there are other staff members also, but with my red fish memory, I can’t remember them). They are truly exceptional! Everyone was so friendly and attentive, making sure that we had a memorable and enjoyable evening. The restaurant itself is beautiful and actually even more stunning than the photos. The ambiance is elegant, warm, and inviting, making it a perfect setting for a special occasion. The food was very good and beautifully presented. The portions were generous, and I found the pricing to be very fair for the quality of the food, service, and overall experience. A few dishes were a little salty for my taste, although I do tend to prefer lighter seasoning. As an Asian myself, I found it interesting and enjoyable how many dishes incorporated different textures, adding a pleasant crunchiness to each bite. My favorite dishes were definitely the octopus skewer and the fried rice. One suggestion for future group events would be to provide a printed group menu at the table. Several guests asked about the menu during the evening, and I had to refer back to my emails to answer their questions. I think having a physical menu available would be greatly appreciated by future groups. Overall, thank you so much to the entire Oncle Lee team. We had an incredible evening and created wonderful memories. I would gladly recommend this restaurant for both special events and a great dining experience.

The 5-spice duck platter is a must-try here — it was delicious, flavourful, and incredibly tender. The portion size was also great for the price. We also tried the spicy noodles and sautéed vegetables, which were both very tasty and perfect for sharing. For dessert, we had the coconut, passion fruit, mango, and tapioca dessert, and it was amazing! Sweet, refreshing, and light — the perfect way to end the meal. The staff were very friendly, and we’ll definitely be coming back.

Came here on an unsuspecting Tuesday night and was pleasantly surprised by not only the food but the excellent service. Our waitress (whose name I regrettably did not ask :( ) was so kind and attentive, even though she was the only one for the night and it was fairly busy she did a fantastic job. The Litchi martini and house beer was excellent as well as our starters! We loved the fried rice and mapo tofu as well. Super cute date spot

Asian fusion with a focus on Chinese food. The 5 spice duck is a must order. Service is friendly and excellent. This place would easily be in my top recommendations for Montreal. Credit goes to my wife for bringing me here.

Modern, fancy twist on Chinese food. Service is excellent, food was very good, creative. They are very attentive to food allergies and were able to provide options and alternatives. Very accommodating and appreciated especially when the chef is able to go off-menu.

What a great evening! Our first time and it won't be the last. 10/10. Service was excellent. Atmosphere was inviting and lively...but the star of the show was the food. Very tasty combination of flavors, textures, cooking techniques and thoughtful interpretation of Asian cuisine. An exciting sharing menu. Good wine selection. Highly recommend.
