Was disappointed with the quality of flavour in the food. Chicken was bland and dry and the potatoes were so starchy that I didn't eat them. My dinner companion had the butcher's cut which was a striploin. He said it was OK. His mashed potatoes were tasty and they made a decent martini. Server was good even though it seemed he was new and not quite comfortable. Was disappointed with the music too sadly. Was expecting something more atmospheric but it was more like what you'd hear in an airport lounge. Pop songs remained to be more "jazz". They could just do so much better. Maybe being in old port has made them slack as they'll get the tourist trade regardless.
What guests say about Modavie
Modavie is often appreciated for its warm atmosphere, live jazz, and elegant decor, especially for a romantic dinner or an evening with friends. Many customers praise the quality of the French cuisine and dishes like duck, seafood, tartares, and desserts, as well as the attentive and welcoming service. That said, some reviews mention high prices, inconsistent service, and noise when the dining room is full or the music is loud. If you're looking for a lively experience with good food and music, it's worth a visit, but it's best to make a reservation and expect an energetic atmosphere.
Reviews / Ratings for Modavie
Overpriced and underwhelming. We came from Toronto for the holidays and were disappointed to find that the food quality didn't match the expensive menu. The flavors were lacking, and it certainly didn't feel like a true high-end dining experience. Not recommended if you're looking for value for your money.
Fantastic service and food. All of the staff were professional, courteous, knowledgable, and kind. Our bartender, Sal, was hands down the best bartender we've ever had. He made the best lemon drop that I've ever tasted, and that's high praise coming from a lemon drop fanatic like myself. Sal also loaded us up with bartender wisdom, introduced us to a few new liquers, and gave us a masterclass on bartending. Beyond the bar, the food itself was fantastic. My walleye was good but nothing extravagant, but the potatoes were magical. I eat potatoes everyday, they're my favorite food, and Modavie managed to create this sweet, aromatic potato puree that tasted heavenly. 10/10 will be coming back.
Had a wonderful experience at Modavie - service, live band, food was all fabulous. Was there for my bachelorette and the band sang a song for us, and comped my meal as they were having billing issues and we had an extended wait for our bill (which they were trying to correct as quickly as possible). Will certainly be returning - what a great experience!
Very fancy and delicious food.
Great food! Beautiful place with elegant deco. One can truly relax and enjoy oid European city charm. Lorenzo was charming host and made our very first visit personable.
This place was amazing! Everything we ordered was just top notch. The lava cake was next level!
We enjoyed the live jazz music and dinner upstairs. Service and food were wonderful in the center of Old Montreal.
The food was absolutely amazing!!! Had the foie gras, mushroom risotto and the duck confit. The foie gras really surprised me, totally recommended!!!
I really didn’t like the fish of the day or the mussels but nevertheless this is a good spot for people who love jazz and like to have a good time. Come here if it’s your 1st time in Montreal. I really enjoyed the hospitality (I’m a harsh reviewer) the waitress let me fold the napkins with him lmfaooo but very friendly place
Great food, and great service. Could not have asked for a better place to celebrate my mothers birthday!
Lorenzo is goat!!! Above and beyond servicexxxx
We truly missed real European food especially French cuisine, then we found this place while visiting Montreal. We couldn’t be more satisfied. The food in this place is magnificent. We had Foie Gras and Beef Tartare as appetizes then Confit Canard and Lamb chops. They happened to have live band also and we could enjoy it although it was only for limited time to due availability of our table.
We went as a party of 4 for new years eve. The location is great and the atmosphere upstairs was very well done with the live jazz singer and the double bass player. The music was not overwhelmingly loud and complemented the experience in an elegant way. We found the service to be excellent. So kudos to the waiter that served us. We had a 5 course dinner with the wine pairing. I didn't find the wine really complemented the flavors of each dish so can't say whether or not a sommelier was involved in the selections. The dishes were good but not outstanding. I could not say that I found myself weak in the knees on first bite of each dish as I had hoped. The food was ok, I still finished everything on my plate. Overall I found the prices was fairly for the quality but nothing outstanding that would entice me to return.
We had an absolutely wonderful dining experience here. The bouillabaisse was perfect — rich, aromatic, and full of fresh seafood, with a beautifully balanced broth that was both comforting and refined. Every bite was packed with flavour and clearly made with care. The presentation was elegant, the portion was generous, and the overall quality far exceeded the price — truly great value for money. Service was pleasant and attentive, making the entire experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommended. We’ll definitely be back!
