Had the best fish, really loved the simplicity of flavours and textures. The staff was great, and the chef prepared us a vegetarian dish off the menu upon request.
What guests say about Le Violon
Le Violon receives a lot of praise for the quality of its dishes, often described as delicious, well thought out, and sometimes excellent or even divine. The service is often highly appreciated for its attentiveness and professionalism, but a few customers mention a cold welcome, uneven recommendations, or delays. On the downside, several find the place noisy, a bit cramped, and rather expensive for the portions. Overall, it is a highly regarded option in Montreal, especially for a refined dining experience.

So we were excited to try this place because it got 8th on the list of Canada's top 100 restaurants. So we were expecting the meal to be great. We've done many tasting menus and so we thought that would be the best way to experience but the chef has to offer. The first dishes were a bread dish with butter and lobster with asparagus and a bechamel sauce. They were good but nothing special. The pate and the fish with harissa sauce were both not that great. The pate for some reason was paired with radish so you had a very very silky smooth Pate which was delicious, but the radish would add a watery texture to it. Not very appealing. Then we got the mains. The salad was fresh with a light dressing. Once again, nothing super special here. And the pork was mixed with a bechamel and a jus. That was good , and finally the fish which didn't really stand out either. For a restaurant getting the top 100 , you would expect something that would stand out and be different. The deserts though were outstanding , that pastry / desert chef deserves an award by herself 🤣. Those were epic. Also our server was amazing and great as well. Overall though not a place I'd recommend to spend $450. Def had better experiences at that price point.
Absolutely fabulous place. We had beef tartare, white asparagus, pork, ravioli, and for dessert we had marenque and citrus tart. Tried 2 different white wines and 2 different res wines. Excellent recommendations by the staff. Dong Ding tea was delicious, reminded me of oolong tea. High quality service and sooo comfortable ambiance and energy. Just fabulous!
Each dish was delicious, visually stunning and beautifully plated.
Way overpriced, mediocre service. Not even close to worth the hype. 54$ scallop dish (before tax + tip) that had a spinach sauce and THREE scallops, that in my opinion were overcooked and rubbery. Best thing on the menu was the Aliment Viens charcuterie, which isn't even something they made, go figure. Take your money elsewhere in Montreal where you can get better value and better food and not feel like you're getting ripped off by hype, especially considering this restaurant still has the tip machine spitting out amounts on the post tax bill, which is technically illegal.
So...Tried Le Violon for the hype. Very cute restaurant on the plateau, pretty noisy, entrances were fantastic, main plate good, didnt take desert. Got a cork wine glass - it happened but they charged me for it. Service was ok.
gorgeous interior and a really upscale, classy atmosphere to spend an evening. that being said, the menu options are pretty limited and the service was incredibly slow during our visit, making the whole dinner stretch out way longer than it needed to. it is a stunning spot if you just want to dress up as a full dining experience, it left me wanting a bit more
Had the pleasure to dine at Le Violon last night. The food was outstanding, the service impeccable and the overall experience most enjoyable! The event was a fixed menu promotion with American Express. We have been to Le Violon before with a regular menu and it was also memorable. The chef Danny Smiles is a culinary genius, and a very well-know and respected chef in Montreal. I encourage Montrealers and tourists alike to try Le Violon as it really is in a class of its own!
very nice service, delicious dishes in those some were scrumptious but some with less layered taste, quite noisy later, still a wonderful dining experience on the whole.
A must! Every dish tastes amazing, the service is impeccable and the drinks were excellent!
I am very disappointed with my experience at Le Violon we had such high expectations. We got seated at the bar and right from the beginning the server was not friendly at all with us. We told her it was our first time in the hope to get some guidance, she told us we should get this specific amount of dishes, did not explained the menu we had to ask her what are the really good stuff, she goes on to mention every most expensive items on the menu without providing any additional details on the dish to help us make a decision while there are literally 3 ingredients listed for every dishes ?! Also sure the most expensive plate may be the best but like tell me more ?! Obviously with her attitude we didn’t wanted to bother her with questions so we just ordered… We ordered some wine and the wine came after we got the appetizers which I find unacceptable for a restaurant with such a reputation. She set us up for the pasta dish with only a fork no knifes so we had to cut our ravioli with the side of our forks, which I’m sorry but why do I have to ask the server for proper ustensils with a 40$ pasta plate. Food was good, maybe a little overrated, maybe I just had too much expectation, but the attitude the server had towards us completely ruined our night. I genuinely wonder if we did anything wrong because 2 people got seated next to us while we were having desserts and they got a beautiful smile from her so I’m clueless as to why we got this cold attitude since the moment we got sat. Honestly most of the small issues could be totally forgave if it wasn’t for the server attitude we really felt not welcome. 400$ for two people, I am never going back there.
IMPECCABLE! highly recommend
Don’t even bother reading other reviews — just give it a try. You won’t regret it. There’s something uniquely special about Violon.
A new happy place for us. The service is top notch, food always well made, wine list excellent and the price range fair. Happines. Pure happiness.
Very unique food and great service. Everything I had was delicious. Only con was that it felt very tight when it comes to space. Otherwise I recommend.
Le Violon is sophisticated culinary experience where the vibrant ambiance of Le Plateau converges with Montréal's gastronomic excellence. The tasting menu showcases exceptional dishes, featuring innovative (and sometimes surprising) ingredient combinations that are expertly prepared and will leave you with a full stomach. Excellent service paired with delightful food in this trendy spot.
Amazing food and service! Allie and McKenzie were great! Super attentive and knowledgeable! The food was the most homey, approachable food for a fine dining experience! Beautiful surprise was the Guinea fowl - lots of umami and great portion! Favourite dish: white asparagus, Rimouski crab and hollandaise - pay extra for the crab, u won’t regret it! Very approachable wine list!
We celebrated our 48th anniversary at Le Violon and it was a perfect choice. We told them it was our anniversary and that we’d take the Chef’s choice, Tasting Menu. It was a wonderful experience these to senior Foodies.😄. The service was perfect as well. Definitely a strong recommendation for Le Violon. Note, the tasking menu is very generous so bring a hearty appetite. Also one item was special and not available on the standard menu, which we loved.
This was an excellent experience. The service we received the moment we walked in the door was top notch. The staff made you truly feel welcome, we sat at the bar near the kitchen and the chef caught us eyeing dishes as they came out, he was so friendly and explained what the dishes were in detail. Mel truly made the experience special, she took time to visit and help us pick out the best coffee shops and restaurants for the rest of our trip. Le Violon is a special place and a must if you are in Montreal, the food is incredible!
We waited a bit pour notre réservation, but it was all good! Once seated, everything was smooth and really enjoyable.
Definitely overrated, especially for a city like Montreal with such a strong food scene. Out of five dishes, only two met expectations (the agnolotti and the boeuf). The other three were very disappointing: asparagus with a poorly executed hollandaise, scallops that were tasteless with an unbalanced sauce, and a crudo that was visually beautiful but lacked flavor. Overall, quite underwhelming given how overpriced it is. Service felt pretentious and more focused on upselling than genuinely guiding us toward the best choices. Not worth the price or the effort of planning weeks ahead to get a reservation.
We enjoyed are dinner so much ! Finally first got the chance to visit the restaurant ! Thank you team!
This isn't a bad restaurant, it's just wildly overrated. Made me a little depressed to come back to Montreal.
For top 100 canadian restaurants, not bad, just underwhelming… also the waiters were trying their best to serve us professionally but they were really awkward.
Fabulous restaurant with great food! Two points that negatively impacted the experience for me. First I made it clear when we ordered that after our initial drink we would be looking for wine to pair with our meal, yet I had to seek out the server when our drinks were finished to get that wine before our main course arrived. Second, while we were enjoying our desert the server nicely asked if it was ok to bring the bill as the next reservation was to arrive shortly. We of course said no problem however it just left a sour taste in my mouth as we were almost finished our desert. This was particularly annoying as there was an empty table of four that was vacant beside us throughout our entire meal and as we stood outside waiting for our cab, that table of four was still empty and the table we just vacated now sat the next couple. Not sure why the couple coming in after us could not have been seated at the table of 4 until we finished our desert and left.
