Decided to give it a try and it was just ok overall. We got the large size poutine, sausage and a cheeseburger. The poutine was good, but not great. The cheese is squeaky, which I love so thank you for that. The gravy is ok but I have had better elsewhere. Fries were ok. Sadly the sausage had no flavour at all. It was displayed as an Italian sausage, so we expected it to be spicier. The hamburger was just ok. In terms of pricing it is actually very good compared to other places but you are also sacrificing some quality for the lower price. Service was good and there's lots of seating outside.
What guests say about La Pataterie Hulloise
La Pataterie Hulloise is often praised for its classic poutine, fresh fries, very squeaky cheese curds, and generous portions. The service is frequently described as friendly and fast, with prices that many customers find reasonable. On the other hand, a few reviews mention inconsistent quality, uneven side dishes, and a place that can sometimes be dirty or smelly. It is a good choice if you are looking for simple, authentic poutine, especially for takeout or a no-frills meal.
Reviews / Ratings for La Pataterie Hulloise
Made a random stop here based fully on vibes and they did not disappoint. Friendly staff, fair prices, good portion sizes, fast service, and oh so squeaky curds in a classic diner setting that doesn't pretend to be an "experience." Pinned and will 100% stop in next time I'm in the area.
I had heard a lot of good things about Pataterie Hulloise, but I honestly wasn’t sure if it would live up to the hype. I decided to stop by and order a small poutine just to test it out for myself. People were not exaggerating. The poutine was absolutely excellent — fresh fries, great gravy, and cheese curds that were on point. Easily the best poutine I’ve had in Gatineau so far. Safe to say I’ll definitely be back. Next time I’m trying the hotdogs.
I live nearby and I want to love it, but the food just sucks. The hamburgers are way over-salted. Coleslaw on a burger just does not work. They drown their mediocre fries in sauce, so if you don’t eat your poutine quickly, it’ll be a soggy mess. You can’t really mess up a steamy, but they are below average. I could overlook the messy and dirty interior if the food was great, but it’s the food is consistently bad so the dirty greasy interior and exterior makes the place that much less appealing. The only upside is the very nice staff. I would give them a higher rating if the place wasn’t so dirty. I love this kind of food and so once every couple of years I go back to see if I was just exaggerating to myself, but no, it really is that bad. I love greasy spoon institutions but this one is undeserved.
This place is AWESOME! Love it! Love them! Can highly recommend! Been going there for many, many years! Always the same delicious food ESP. THE FRIES!!!!!!! ♥️
Best poutine in town.Price is ok.definitely a bang for the buck.Visit this place if you're in Ottawa downtown or Gatineau
This poutine is perfect. It has the best thick almost caramelized brown potato fries and generous heaps of cheese curds. Nothing in the world compares and I’m happy to make a long drive for Hulloise.
Exactly what I wanted. Squeaky cheese poutine from a "hole in the wall" with friendly staff and great tasting food.
Great Poutine and Fries. Everything good..
Generous portions, simple classic poutine, exactly what you would expect from fries, cheese and gravy.
The workers are nice but the poutine was terrible! The grilled chicken was sooooo bad. I don’t recommend it. Try something else..
Poutine was amazing, authentic. Fair pricing. The smell from the basement washroom in the entre bathroom was nasty. Ruined the meal. I don’t anticipate they correct this issue.
If you want an authentic poutine, this is the place. If you're not French Canadian then this place also gives you a cultural experience in the best of ways.
Fair poutine prices! This operates as takeout counter but there are many places to sit.
We made the trip from Toronto to Gatineau and stopped at La Pataterie Hulloise on the subreddit recommendation. I’m from Quebec originally and have had a lot of poutine in my life, never had one with fries that so perfectly melt in your mouth. From the pics I’d seen I was concerned the sauce was very dark but it was not overpowering. Staff were super friendly and generous portion for the money. Very worth a visit if you are in the area!
I was in town with my family and have been craving poutine. This place is a small gem. They serve a good amount of everything. The fries were cooked fresh and had the perfect crisp to them. I also like how their gravy wasn’t salty compared to other ones I’ve tried. The worker was friendly and patient. Overall, cravings were highly satisfied.
This is my go-to poutine spot and has been for years, fresh fries, and tons of curds! And to whoever said the presentation was lacking...idk what you expect, its poutine. I was in earlier today and when the guy in front of me didnt have enough money to pay for his meal, the guy behind the counter paid for him - shoutout to that guy. Dont forget to tip the kind-hearted staff!!
Always loved the food. Until ask If I am muslim because stuff is made from pork. Keep your religion out of the food.
Awesome poutine spot that’s open in the winter. Super friendly staff, but some speak very little English so make sure you know what you’re looking to order. Everything was very fresh, and portions are huge for the prices.
I'm mainly posting this review to let this owners know my experience of trying to get to try this place. I planned a trip to the Ottawa/Gatineau area with this being one of the main stops to try authentic Quebec poutine. On new years eve, I called a couple times while they were still open and nobody picked up to make sure they're open on new years day like most eateries on the Ontario side. On new years day I called again to see if they're open as I wanted to come from south Ottawa to this place. So we ventured here just in case before our long drive back to Southern Ontario only to find them closed. Someone could've answered the phone when they were open to let me know they're closed on new years day or even a courtesy message to those who aren't familiar with their new years hours. I don't want to giveth a 1 dtar but want to still let them know the disappointment especially those coming from far.
