Dispatch from the Draft Zone We came to a highly rated restaurant looking for a civilized dinner and found ourselves strapped into a seat directly in the line of fire of the front door, where a vicious little breeze had been waiting all night for someone to ruin. It was 5°C outside. The door was being held open a few centimetres by a duct-taped doorstop, a ‘temporary’ measure against slamming that had hardened into policy, like most temporary measures do. Our waitress took one look at the situation and declared it unsolvable, then slipped back to consult the chef, who presumably emerged from a cloud of steam to deliver the ruling: a slamming door is a crime against the dining experience, but a table of paying guests slowly turning blue is simply atmosphere. The doorstop stayed. Our humble petition to slide the tables over by 30 cm, or regroup them so we weren't sitting in the wind tunnel, was rejected without a hearing. Then, miraculously, other guests left and we were offered a new table. A kind gesture, and one I suspect we purchased with sustained, theatrical discomfort. I'll grant them the benefit of the doubt, but only just. And here is the cruel joke: the food was magnificent. The by-the-glass wine was perfectly fine, the $75 seafood platter was worth every cent, and the octopus was the kind of thing worth smuggling out in a coat pocket. Whoever is running that kitchen deserves a medal. Whoever is running the front of house deserves a space heater.

Hi Adin. Thank you for spending the night with us and for the kind words regarding the food and the wine. We are truly sorry that your experience was negatively impacted by the front door. However, the temporary measure is actually temporary and did not turn into policy as implied in your comment; in fact, we are getting the new door installed this week. Unfortunately there are some rather long delays to change a custom commercial door which are not within our control. We look forward to hosting you again in a warm and cozy room!

I heard amazing things about this place but was quite disappointed! Went with a friend for her birthday on a Friday night. We chose to do a menu caché so didn’t know what we’d be getting. Surprisingly we weren’t asked how many plates we wanted or how our hunger was going throughout the night. Overall the dishes were good but not out of this world. We both found it generally under-seasoned. We didn’t get enough bread with the pâté- and the waiter never told us that they ran out of bread until we asked for more. They also ran out of tartar. Sadly the service was the most disappointing part for us- we weren’t checked on, we kept to the same glasses of alcohol all night, even though we had finished them earlier on. It didn’t seem like the server cared much for our being there. We noticed only 1 person prepping food- maybe they were understaffed? But at the same time we could see the server making time and taking shots with people sitting at the bar. We asked for the bill early because our dishes were taking too long but the server insisted the food was coming (the table next to us had the same frustrations). By the end (almost 3hrs after we arrived) our table and our neighbors table were given digestive shots as an apology but it didn’t feel like enough to excuse the lack of attention throughout the night. A really odd and unexpected experience! Having eaten at parapluie, I had high expectations but this just didn’t cut it. Hopefully it was a one off night… I would go back but I’d need a lot of convincing to.

Tried to do a walk in for 1 at Parapluie. They were full and sent me to Cave next door. Ordered seafood and a French red wine… wow. Amazing food. Staff were very friendly and kind. Blew my expectations!!

Cute spot, nice wine selection. Lovely staff, although it seemed understaffed. The food, however... extremely disappointing and not very tasty. This seems like another tiny plates Instagram fad - like Montreal doesn't already have a trillion
