Excellent service and food
What guests say about L'Express
L’Express seems to be a classic French bistro that is very popular in Montreal, with a lively and authentic atmosphere, as well as service that is often quick, professional, and welcoming. Many guests highlight standout dishes such as steak frites, duck, profiteroles, and well-prepared meats, along with a wine list seen as interesting and sometimes reasonably priced. On the other hand, some reviews mention a noisy setting, uneven meals depending on the dish or service, and value for money that is sometimes questioned. Booking ahead is often recommended, especially during busy hours.

3/5 food but its just a magical place, i love it. would marry this restaurant if i could.
Good bistro food and great wine list. Duck was OK, soup was fantastic. My companion liked his boudin. Service is both friendly and professional. It got very loud as the place filled up: noise bounces on the mirrored walls, it is difficult to have a conversation at a normal volume. And the lights are very bright. I don't remember these issues being a problem for my many visits over the years - maybe I get less tolerant with time.
Freshslice Pizza
Ordered the steak frites and it was very very good. They serve pickles with mustard at the table and those were also very good. Interior looks nice and service was very attentive. Signage is minimum, you don’t know you’re there until you’re basically at the door. Prices were also very reasonable considering the quality.
The food is incredible!! I started with a vegetable soup and every piece of vegetables were cut to the same size. I then had the steak and frites. The fries were perfect!! The ambiance was something of the 1930’s/40’s New York. Staff was incredible and they have unlimited little pickles.
Iconic but the food is basic and just ok at best... soup and steak rly needs salt. Duck is very goood tho
Authentic French restaurant in Plateau!
Ordered veal kidney, it was amazing, love that flavor and topping, you must try it! Finished, 😎. You can see how I love it:)
Place is great!!
food was so good we came back twice in 3 days. beef cappacio was super fresh. foie gras parfait was amazing. hanger steak was perfection. lamb shank tender. dessert was superb. profiterole and lemon tart are standouts. wine list is affordable and good too. service is quick and so is their turnaround. reservations are needed so do call them.
Most overrated institution in Montreal. Fries are inedible. Gherkins are dried out. Tartar is vile and overchopped. (compared to Lemeac especially). It's just an embarassment by now, and people will tell you it's good because they're afraid to not "get it".
Overall great food and authentic French environment. Duck confit: duck cooked super well, the red sauce/bean mixture it came with was good, but would have preferred another side. Quail: really good. Everything paired well and the meat was well cooked. Sauce and rice were perfect. Profiteroles: sooo good. not too sweet. Chocolate cake: really good no complaints
On the last day of 2025, we dined at this French restaurant without waiting in line or being pressured into a New Year's set menu. We sampled several signature dishes, which were quite tasty, and the desserts were delicious too. The prices were reasonable, and the place was packed. The plain white tablecloths felt a bit too simple—they should add a logo or some design.
Walked in and they made us feel special. The night was busy but they made room. Unfortunately our server did not match the atmosphere, we almost left no tip. Alexis saved our night and our dining experience. He was always there. Checked on the details. Offered a beautiful smile. Thank you Alexis. Will be back because of your service.
