Not fresh and pricey
Reviews / Ratings for Kyo Bar Japonais
Loud on a Sat evening but food was really good - especially the beef short ribs. Sashimi was really fresh too. Highly recommended!
Fantastic $120.00 tasting. The service and the food were the best.
The cocktails, mocktails and food are all great. We loved the 10 pc chef’s sashimi, 10 pc chef’s maki, vegetarian spring rolls, and particularly the tataki sake. The matcha colada, Taiyo, fleur du Kyo, and eclat rose were all delicious as well. They were easily able to accommodate a gluten allergy. Service was good.
Amazing food! We hope to go back someday.
This was a 5/5 Japanese cuisine experience here in Mtl and super close to where we were staying. 3 of us including a toddler ended up here for dinner and they had the perfect table with a high chairs for my child ready to go as we showed up. The food was delicious. We ordered quite a tasting menu, which included aome dishes like udon yaki, tataki, skewers, edmamae, spicy Salman sushi, karage chicken and a heaping extra of pickled ginger slices. Thanks for hooking us up with that. The wasabi tasted fresh and it was super good!! A great place to dine in for dinner and the atmosphere was quite the vibe.
I went here with my girlfriend and we tried the tasting menu. We’re both big foodies, so we had high expectations, and honestly, it didn’t disappoint at all. Every dish was well thought out and full of flavor. The service was great, friendly, attentive, and not over the top. The ambiance was also really nice, comfortable and perfect for a relaxed evening.Overall, we had a really good experience and would definitely come back.
Bad Attitude to costumer
My friend and I were so excited to eat here as the reviews seem amazing and the pictures looked incredible. But overall we thought the food was mid and expensive for what it was. We ordered gyoza, the 7 pc sashimi and 15 pc chefs choice sushi. Nothing special about it tbh… This place was pretty disappointing considering how highly it’s rated. However the atmosphere was pretty cool and the decor was nice. But other than that, we wouldn’t come back
I ordered the tasting menu and it was absolutely amazing. The portions were generous and everything was really good.
Nice place, but unfortunately getting very loud in the evening 😩
A great date night place. Very chic , food was amazing. Service staff was very good and explained well the Kyo concept. Definitely réserve ahead, place was packed but reservations are early available a few days ahead... Parking is a bit of an issue but it is always the case in the old port of Montreal, as a suggestion- just keep in driving on Saint-Antoine west to the court parking lot...only a few steps away . Warmly recommended place.
Elizabeth is the best. Kind, Insightful and just amazing.
Unbelievable food, service, and atmosphere. I was attending a conference in Montreal and happened upon this restaurant and I was very grateful that I did. One of the best food experiences I have ever had! I deferred the food recommendations to Kathy and she did not disappoint with both her selections and service. The first recommendation was the Gindara Saikyo Yaki, which was absolutely outstanding. I would visit Montreal from Ohio just to eat this dish. Next was the Unagi roll… also outstanding. Packed with lots of ginger on the side, which I appreciate. Last was the Tataki Maguro. Amazing. You absolutely have to try it. Perfect amount of spicy and crunchy, packed with flavor. I am very grateful to have happened upon Kyo. I cannot recommend it highly enough. My compliments to the chef and the entire team for an incredible experience. Thank you for your care in cultivating such incredible dishes in a fun, enjoyable environment. And a special thank you to Kathy who hit a home run with her suggestions!
Great service Great food Always an amazing place to visit
Shared many items and the Udon dish by far was the best. Sushi rolls were good but nothing spectacular. Picture includes sushi rolls and raw scallops.
Rude staff. Tables were empty with no reservation and she made us sit at the bar with no explanation. Expensive food and long wait.
Honestly, this was a disappointing experience. Given the prices, the quality felt underwhelming at best. We ordered the Gyuyaki (miso), which arrived cold and chewy, with nothing particularly memorable about it. We also went for the chef’s choice sashimi and maki. When you order something labeled “chef’s choice,” you expect it to showcase the restaurant’s strengths, both in flavor and creativity. Unfortunately, neither stood out. It lacked not only originality but also depth in taste. As someone who genuinely loves sushi and has tried everything from high-end omakase to more casual spots, I can confidently say I’ve had better experiences at places that cost significantly less. The only dish I truly enjoyed was the mushroom skewers, which were flavorful and well-prepared. Service was another letdown. From the beginning, the waiter came across as unfriendly and slightly condescending. There was little effort to be helpful or welcoming, and the way the tip was brought up felt awkward and far from subtle. Overall, it feels like the restaurant has declined since the menu change. Not only were some great items removed, but the overall quality seems to have dropped as well. At this price point, it simply isn’t worth it anymore. The only aspect that still holds up is the ambiance. Food (quality/price): 6/10 Service: 3/10 Ambiance: 8/10
Portions are noticeably smaller than they used to be, while prices remain high, making the value worse. The place was also very loud and crowded, and service felt slow and inattentive at times. Food and drinks were average at best and didn’t justify the price. Overall, it feels like quality and value have declined.
Great atmosphere paired with attentive and welcoming service made for an enjoyable dining experience overall. The food was solid, with the udon standing out as particularly delicious—well-prepared and full of flavor. The salmon poke bowl, while fresh, felt a bit underwhelming compared to others I’ve had. A few additions like kimchi, avocado and onion could really elevate the dish and bring more depth and balance. Overall, a pleasant spot with strong service and standout dishes, with just a bit of room for refinement on certain menu items.
This place is absolutely incredible. The food is genuinely authentic — fresh, refined, and full of perfectly balanced flavors. Every dish felt thoughtfully crafted. The cocktails were on another level too. After three years in Toronto, I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve experienced something that feels like a true gastronomic escape. Beautiful interior, great atmosphere, and very professional, attentive staff. I highly recommend it to anyone who truly appreciates Japanese cuisine.
Service felt UNWELCOMING and SELECTIVE We walked in without a reservation and were initially acknowledged by the host, who appeared ready to seat us. She had already picked up menus and was about to bring us to a table. However, another staff member intervened, spoke to her briefly and after that, we were told they could no longer accommodate us due to an “event” happening in the back. This explanation didn’t align with what we observed. There were still several diners seated at the time, and the restaurant was clearly operating. If capacity was an issue due to a private event, it would have been more appropriate to communicate that upfront before indicating that seating was possible. We were dressed casually, as we had been walking around Montreal, and that sudden change in response made us think whether appearance played a role in how we were treated.
Degustation menu was rich, diverse and a showcase of the Chef’s skills. service was equally impeccable.
William is the best.
Nice resto - great ambiance and the food was really good. Had the Happening Gourmand menu. It was a nice variety and good portions. Presentation was very well done!
