Food was alright, the flavor was there. I had the lamb skewers but compared to the one in Chinatown, this one feels like it's missing something. I also got the rice poke with cod, they added too much water when they cooked the rice, the texture was getting to congee territory. The place didn't use their heater so everyone was on their winter coat. The system to order is not as seemless, you need to scan a qr code, download the app, and register an account. Lastly, when we go to pay, I didn't realize but they charge a service fee and after, the screen shows the option to tip.

Hello, thank you for visiting and for your feedback. We would like to clarify that we use Japanese short-grain rice, which naturally has higher moisture content and a softer texture than Southern or Thai rice. This is a normal characteristic of the rice, not due to excess water. Our indoor temperature was maintained at around 22–24°C. We initially offered seating near the heater, but you chose to move to a table closer to the entrance, where cold air can enter when the door opens. Other guests were dining comfortably. Our ordering system only requires scanning the QR code — no app download or registration is required. The 8% service fee is clearly disclosed before ordering and covers ordering system maintenance, complimentary seasonings, and table heating equipment. Your companion also confirmed at checkout that you were aware of this fee. Lastly, restaurant taxes are mandatory by law and cannot be waived. We are legally required to collect and remit them to the government. Thank you for your understanding.

Edit: After reading the store’s response, I want to clarify that it does not accurately reflect our in-store experience. When placing my order, I pointed directly to the poster showing the larger Tanghulu skewers and even tried to request two specific fruits. I was told that individual selections were not allowed because it was “chef’s choice,” and that they could only be purchased as a set of three. At no point was this explained as a “blind box” or that it would involve significantly smaller portions. We were not offered any alternative options beyond the three-piece portion we received. This was not a case of us ordering the wrong item and receiving something different. Additionally, the sugar coating on the fruit did not taste fresh, despite their explanation. I ended up throwing it out entirely, which was a waste of my money because it was simply not enjoyable. I’ve had traditional Tanghulu at other places and am familiar with how it should taste. It’s disappointing that their responses consistently shift blame onto customers instead of taking accountability or attempting to make things right. ————— Really disappointed with the quality of what we received. The tanghulu looked nothing like the photos shown on their Google page or the in-store poster. Instead of long skewers with several pieces of fruit, we were given a very small portion. Paying $10.99 for this felt like a complete rip-off. On top of that, everything was wrapped in plastic. While I assume it was meant to protect the food, the plastic wouldn’t peel off properly and kept breaking into small pieces. We had to remove it bit by bit, which took far too long and was frustrating. When we finally tasted it, the sugar coating was super burnt and didn’t taste fresh at all. Definitely not worth the price.

This review is based on a misunderstanding of the product. You purchased our Mini Tanghulu Blind Box (3 mini skewers, $10.99), which is clearly displayed in-store with a poster. The product you received matches exactly what is shown on the poster. The large tanghulu skewers are a different product at a different price, and you did not purchase that item. The paper you referred to is edible glutinous rice paper, not plastic. It is the traditional way tanghulu is packaged in China and is required for takeaway orders to prevent the caramelized sugar from sticking together. It is not meant to be peeled off piece by piece. This may be unfamiliar if you have not encountered traditional tanghulu before. Tanghulu is made with caramelized sugar, which naturally hardens and may darken. This is a normal characteristic of the product. All information regarding size and price was clearly provided before you placed your order.
