Was in the area and wanted to grab a quick bite. I got a small poutine, 3 piece chicken tenders and fried pickles. The fried pickles were nice and crispy, but very oily. The ranch served with them was great. The 3 piece chicken tenders were overly seasoned, and almost burned. I think they left the food in the fryer for way too long. The chicken itself was good, but the extra seasoning and burnt taste made my whole experience bitter. The poutine, however, was horrible. It was all overly salty and the fries were burnt. I was honestly shocked as to why they even served me that. I understand that some pieces can burn, but my fries were ALL a chocolatey brown colour. I got it with the pepper sauce which I did like. Highlight of the meal were the cheese curds and price point which was very cheap. My entire meal cost me only $20.00. I hope they were just having a bad day because the food does truly have potential if not burnt or overly salty.
Reviews / Ratings for Chez Mel’s Kitchen- Cuisine Canadienne/ Caribéenne
I am so glad we decided to try this place! The food was all made super fresh, the portions were very generous, and the service was next level! Did I mention it was so delicious our normally very chatty family was totally silent and fully involved with our meal while enjoying it 😂 We will certainly be visiting this hidden gem often!
Best poutine around the area, the sauce is really good and the cheese fresh. The chicken was nice and crispy and we had really good portions for the price! The owner is friendly and obviously passionate about her food.
Best homemade Jerk chicken I've tasted since being in the carribean.. excellent balance of heat and flavors!
I’ve been to Mel’s several times since she opened in the summer of 2025. The food is always delicious with big portions, especially the wraps. I’ve also had her 5oz gourmet cookies several times, and I’ve never been disappointed. The food is always fresh, and the prices are fair. I’ve always been greeted with a smile and good service. I will definitely be back!
I really wish I could leave this review anonymously because every time someone posts anything less than glowing about Mel's Kitchen, the owner , or sometimes her friends, jump into the comments to argue on social media. That alone makes the whole experience uncomfortable. To be fair, the fried chicken is probably the best thing on the menu. It’s crispy, flavorful, and actually well done. But unfortunately, that’s where the praise ends for me. The rest of the food has been consistently disappointing. Dishes are often overly spiced to the point where you can’t taste anything but heat, and many items come out overcooked and dry. Proper seasoning and cuisson really matter, and right now it feels like the recipes need serious refinement. Either the spices are out of balance or the food is left cooking too long , sometimes both. Constructive criticism shouldn’t turn into an online debate. I hope the focus shifts toward improving consistency, managing spice levels, and paying closer attention to cooking times. There’s potential here, but it’s not being realized beyond the fried chicken. Bullying customers on social media because you want everyone to like your food not a way of doing things either.
