Service is very slow. Food is mid, I asked for my asada steak medium rare and it came to me basically like shoe rubber. Originally I wanted tacos and rice but they dont come with rice, so the waitress suggested this plate because she said I can "build my taco" but no it was basically a steak platter, no tortillas came with it. So I was a little disappointed because I really wanted tacos. Not once did the waitress come to see if everything was okay with our food, I would have complained about my steak before hand but I couldn't. When we finished our plates, we waited a long time and we had to call her to get her to take our plates and ask for my dessert and bills. The tres leches cake was good though.... I am pleased that they didnt charge me for my plate, but Mexican food is my favorite and I was very disappointed. Unfortunately I will not be returning to this restaurant again.
Reviews / Ratings for Casa Azul Montreal
Finally, a Mexican restaurant in Montreal that goes beyond tacos and celebrates the traditional cuisine - beautifully executed, elaborate dishes like moles, molcajete, and chiles en nogada, the kind of food that is so hard to find done right. The drink selection is solid mezcal offering and cocktails that go well beyond basic margaritas. Service is outstanding: attentive, quick, offered in three languages. The ambiance is the perfect balance of authentic Mexican vibe without trying too hard. No unnecessary sophistication, just genuinely flavorful, carefully prepared food served in a warm, inviting setting. A place you come to enjoy real Mexican cuisine, not a simplified version of it.
Real authentic food
Pros: Beautiful ambience and decor, good service, great selection of Mexican dishes some of which would be hard to find anywhere else. Cons: It is of course the food why we came to this place. We really wanted to try Chile en nugada especially after reading the novel “Like Water for Chocolate”. And what a disappointment when it was served lukewarm. Asked the server and he said it was normal as they did not want us to burn ourselves. Yet the molcajete came extremely hot as expected! Also Chile en nugada came without pomegranate seeds which is a must in this recipe. Budget cuts? And the molcajete mixte which costs $75 also speaks of budget cuts. It was missing the promised grilled cheese and nopales and had only a small quantity of beef, only 3 small tiger shrimps. It did have some cheap filler that looked like potato flautas. Overall impression: mixed feelings, unsure if would come back.
As a Mexican, discovering this place made me proud. From the decor to the service, everything reflects authentic Mexican culture. I went to brunch (must try ) with my partner and we were really happy to see our culture and gastronomy represented with such care and respect. Paisanos, let’s support places like this!
Beautiful place to share with your friends or family, unfortunately the buffet is very small of options, the egg they gave me was cold, the chicharron in sauce was good but the sauce was very liquid, the ranchero beans are the same, rich but a lot of broth, the chilaquiles flat nor did I want to try them, the quesadillas were very watered, in short, the food has a 6 out of 10... and it was very strange for me that in the buffet service they served you was not much amount, asking if that's enough and the dishes were running out and they were late in filling, whenever I went to a buffet, I take what I want and as much as I want.
I don’t know who give them 5 stars , we just came from this place , 4 peoples for brunch . Overpriced place . Says a buffet , but was nothing to eat , everything is cold , sweet chicken , no posole , service too long , I took frites but wasn’t ketchup, Beautiful restaurant decor . . However, the service was slow and a little confused, but the servers ok. I think those people never visit buffet choice because what they propose cost not more then 12$ . Very disappointed with menu ( absolutely different from picture ) and prices .Never come again and don’t conseil to my friends . Wasting money ..
As a Mexican I had great expectations about this brunch especially because I’ve been here for dinner 3 times. Honestly this brunch does not worth 35CAD. They basically offer you tacos dorados (fried tacos), enchiladas, pozole and eggs… If this place is run by a Mexican they should know that they need desperately offer: fruit, juice, unlimited coffee, bread, and more options for food. There are plenty of options that could be offered apart from their very sad eggs. I would recommend this place for dinner and nice drinks, but their brunch is basically made of tacos dorados and eggs. All other stuff are sides! :( so sad our experience was this bad. I hope the owner can take a look at this and make sure local people get a real Mexican experience because our breakfasts/brunchs are much more than this.
Amazing Ambience, delicious food and great service! ✨
A cocktail place i guess? Clearly not a “food” place as the dishes were pretty mid. The tacos dorados were basic and the Mixto Molcajete shared 70$ plate had too many fried things and not enough vegetables considering there were supposed to be some (there was guacamole and beans but that’s the bare minimum). Not worth it at all considering the price. The atmosphere is nice but that is pretty much it. The service took forever.
great service, great good
The service was immaculate, loved that they offered tea and soup on the house. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was very pleasant and cozy ✨
The restaurant is beautiful. The food was beautifully served, and tasted great. I highly recommend the enchiladas and the bone marrow appetizer.
Chicken bones in the cold enchilada. Tiny portions. (A palm-sized dish of rice with the fajita.) No discernible tequila in the margaritas. Took 1.5 hrs for food to arrive. Didn’t bring the appetizer, then tried to charge for it. The only time in my 50 years of living I have not left a tip. Overpriced to boot. Don’t do it.
Beautiful restaurant, well decorated. However, the service was slow and a little confused, but the servers were nice. The big problem is that they are CHEAP! We ordered a ceviche mixto for $25, which was missing a lot of fish and shrimps, but the bigger issue is that we got 2 chips for the ceviche and when we asked for more chips, we were charged $3 more! Ridiculous! We also had fajitas and only got one tortilla. Again, this is on the cheap side. The food is not bad, not excellent, but for the price, they have to realize that if they keep being cheap, they will not last. The drink were at best okay. Again, they were cheap on the tequila for the margarita. It tasted like a good juice. Overall, the experience was disappointing.
From the service to the actual taste of the food everything was perfect!
Food was Ok but too expensive, the service was slow and downstairs we were freezing all night. This was one of the worse experience I had in a long time. I do not recommend going to this place during the cold season.
We went there for a birthday party. The venue was nice, the staff friendly... However, the margarita at 12$ was tasting basically like to supermarket frozen can mix. The waiter asked us what choice we made from the group menu. Two guest asked for the "Taco Bar" option. Its only once everybody was served that these 2 guests were told that the "Taco Bar" option is only possible if EVERYONE takes it. The food was below average for a restaurant like this. The Enchiladas where so vinegary. Portion was small. A comment that was heard around the room, and it pains me to repeat it, "Tres Amigos has better food, for better price". Yikes. Calamaris where good. No one came to ask us if we wanted wine, the water was never filled up, plates where removed rapidly. Desert was ok (whipped cream was a sort of a knock off cool whip). We where downstairs so the cold temperature is understandable, but only 1 roll of toilet paper in the bathroom and no hand towels for 22 persons is questionable. Bills took 45+ minutes to be brought to us only to found out that the delay was du to the 15% tip that was hand-calculated and added to every bill (even if on the menu it was CLEARLY printed out "Tax and Tip NOT INCLUDED") One guest asked tge manager to remove the 15% tip he was forced to pay to no avail.
The most hospitable restaurant I’ve ever been to, and the food is very good.
