What guests say about Bistro Hortus

Bistro Hortus stands out mainly for its gluten-free cuisine, with several reviews mentioning vegetarian/vegan options, varied menus, and tasty dishes. The service is often described as very attentive, warm, and efficient, and the atmosphere as pleasant or cozy. A few customers, however, found some dishes too salty, some desserts disappointing, or the place a bit noisy, so the experience seems to vary depending on the visit.

A wonderful place with a pleasant atmosphere and great foods. Organic burger and the beef poutine were both amazing. Highly recommended.

We are visiting from Nova Scotia, and our hearts were so full being able to offer our celiac kiddo her first fully GF restaurant. She was able to try all our meals, and all the gluten eaters loved their meals just as much! English is well accommodated,

Completely gluten free restaurant. Farm to table. I ordered burger (which was extremely good) and fries and hubby ordered vegetable curry. Plus they have Helix beer ( gluten free)

Bistro Hortus was a meal I had been looking forward to, especially given its farm-to-table concept and tasting menu. The staff is friendly and attentive. The place is cozy and pleasant. The presentation throughout the meal was beautiful, each course was thoughtfully plated and visually appealing. However, several times the flavors simply didn’t match the aesthetics. The venison appetizer looked stunning but lacked depth and flavor. The main course followed a similar pattern: attractive presentation, but the sauce fell flat. That said, the duck and vegetables themselves were well-prepared and properly cooked. Dessert was the biggest disappointment. It came across as underwhelming and somewhat incomplete, partially poached, hard to cut, lacking flavor, and paired with bland crumbs that didn’t add much to the dish. I should note that I wasn’t alone in this experience, others at my table who ordered the same tasting menu (priced at $75 CAD) shared similar feedback. In hindsight, the next time, I will order from the regular menu instead. Recommended, with some caveats.

Best food in Quebec city! 100% gluten free, local fresh foods, home made honey, and just a great experience overall! Not only compares to the greatest restaurants around the province, but competes!

Lovely meal and wonderful service. So many options if you have dietary restrictions. They have their own honey from the rooftop as well!

Great restaurant we discovered during our stay in quebec city. We tried the table gourmande menu and everything was really good. But what really stood out was the service. The manager was amazing and super attentiv, friendly. We really appreciated him. Thanks for the experience

Bonjour monsieur Varnier, We’re sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. We take great care to ensure the quality and consistency of our dishes, although seasoning can naturally vary depending on personal taste. As for the crème brûlée, it’s one of our signature desserts. It’s made with our own natural honey from our beehives, which gives it its distinctive sweetness. Regarding American Express, we unfortunately decided not to accept it due to the very high transaction fees that small businesses like ours would have to pay. Kind regards, The Bistro Hortus Team

We went there for New Year's Eve for the fixed menu. Everything was way too salty and my partner and I both had bad tummy aches after. He end up going home early and having diarrhea that night. Ruined our night.
