Overall Impression Tonight was one of those experiences that perfectly captures what fast food chains have become. I stopped into A&W on Sainte-Catherine in the Village expecting exactly what fast food is supposed to provide: convenience, consistency, and speed. Instead, I spent close to an hour there in total because my order had apparently been handed to someone else. At first, I tried being patient. Mistakes happen. But what followed was less about the mistake itself and more about the complete indifference surrounding it. What I Liked: Honestly… not a damn thing. The front counter operation felt chaotic from start to finish. There were roughly 12 -14 people lined up, another handful standing around waiting for orders, one worker trying to take orders while occasionally helping elsewhere, and absolutely no sense of urgency or organization. When I finally asked where my order was after waiting far too long, I was first told: “It was called and nobody answered.” Then moments later: “It was called and somebody took it.” Either way, the implication seemed to be that this had somehow become my problem. After pushing back firmly, I was told: “Give me a few minutes.” Twenty more minutes passed. I was bluntly told they simply weren’t making it anymore. No apology. No ownership. Just complete indifference. When I asked for the owner’s contact information, I was refused and told: “Come back tomorrow.” When I insisted again, I was told to go to the back of the line. Absolute craziness. Atmosphere & Vibe: The restaurant itself reflected the experience. Garbage on tables. Sticky surfaces. Floors needing attention. Confused customers waiting around trying to figure out where their food was. What struck me most was how far these places have drifted from what they once represented. A&W, like many chains from that era was built on family atmosphere, consistency, quality at scale, and convenience. Now it feels like the modern fast food experience has hollowed itself out completely. Understaffed restaurants. Employees who seem disconnected and defeated. No hospitality. No pride in the environment. No sense that anybody actually cares whether customers leave happy. Just transactions and frustration. The nostalgia that once carried these places is fading fast and tonight honestly felt like watching the final nail go in. Closing: I won’t be returning to this location. And truthfully, experiences like this are making me question returning to chains like A&W at all. The value proposition simply isn’t there anymore. When fast food stops being: * fast, * clean, * pleasant, * or convenient… …what exactly is left? At this point, the nostalgia is doing almost all the heavy lifting and even that’s starting to run out of gas.
