Loved everything about this place, very helpful staff despite how busy it can get.
Reviews / Ratings for St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal
I always come here when I visit Montreal. Unfortunately this place has turned into a money grabbing, greedy establishment. I went to pick up 5 dozen bagels. The best part about this place is taking a bite from a hot soft bagels upon purchase. You can imagine 60 bagels are quite heavy to carry. So I sat down at a table in order to quickly bite into one, so that I could put down my 5 dozen bagels. The usual manager walks up to me and asked if I purchased a sandwich, and that only people who have purchased a sandwich are allowed to sit down. I looked around and there were 4 other free vacant tables, NO LINE UPS because it was afternoon 4pm. I had 1 small bagel in my hand that I was half way finished already. He was so money greedy forcing me to buy a damn sandwich (higher priced than a bagel) that he doesn’t realize that I’m already carrying $80 worth of bagels in my bag and am simply trying to take a few minutes to enjoy one. Overall, service is subpar compared to other locations. The one near the airport (DDO location) serving fresh hot soft piping bagels and they will help you bag into plastic bags too. When I asked for that at this location, they said they’ll give me the plastic bags and I can do it myself.
Glorified fast food.
Nice place to try the delicious bagels, great service. For tourists only cash or Canadian debit cards! ATM right in the corner
Nice Montreal style freshly baked in house bagel in a truly authentic neighbourhood. We packed couple of bagels for a stroll around neighbourhood and good coffee. Queue was fast, some condiments are available too.
A beloved Montreal institution! St-Viateur is home to perhaps Montreal’s most famous culinary creation, the Montreal-style bagel. You’ll definitely encounter a line, but it moves quickly, and the ordering process is smooth. It’s fun to see the boisterous bagel production factory right in front of you as the shop is constantly pumping out hot, wood-fired bagels. I got the Traditional on their most popular flavor, the sesame. The bagel itself was fresh out of the oven and so crunchy. The inside was soft and fluffy with a bit of sweetness from the honey water these bagels are boiled in. The salmon, cream cheese, and veggies all tasted fresh as well. I assure you if you’re a bagel lover, you will crave St-Viateur long after your trip to Montreal!
Very disappointed. The bagel was very dry. We took 3 differents kinds all same . It supposed to be a branch from the authentic most famous bagel in Montreal, but really far away. The filling was poor and testless. I was really expecting better than this.
I had a mixed experience here. The person who greeted us was exceptionally kind, whereas the person taking my order was the total opposite. She wanted me to go pay at another counter before I even uttered a word, and then she repeatedly mistook what I was asking for, despite the fact that it was a very simple order and I made it as clear as possible. Anyways, now onto the food. The sesame bagels are always incredible here. In contrast, the poppy seed bagels were cold, chewy, and had almost no seeds on them. Maybe it's just a location issue. If you ask me, I'd rather spend my money at the original spot.
Good chewy bagel. Can get crowded on the weekends.
I’m here to settle the long-standing debate: Fairmount Bagel vs. St-Viateur Bagel. As someone who especially enjoys bagels as sandwiches, St-Viateur takes the win for me. The bagels are fresh, flavorful, and have the perfect texture—slightly crisp on the outside while still soft and chewy inside. The prices are very reasonable, the service is fast, and the portions are surprisingly filling, making it a great spot for a satisfying meal without breaking the bank. We tried both the Traditional and Le Steak, served on their all-dressed bagel, and both were absolutely delicious. The combination of the fresh bagel with the sandwich fillings worked perfectly and really showcased why this place is so popular. This is definitely a spot I’ll come back to every time I visit Montreal. Recommended items: Traditional, Le Steak (on all-dressed bagel)
They are incredibly rude — absolutely no customer service at all. As long as people keep supporting places like this, they’ll continue thinking this behavior is acceptable.
The last time I visited St Viateur was over 20 years ago when I was working in Montreal. I'm happy to see this old friend still making the best bagel I've ever tasted just like before. And it seems they are even more popular than before. The old oven behind the counter is still there and so is the open store front on Mont-Royal. I ordered my old standby the traditionnel avec bagel tout garni. It tasted wonderful and otherworldly as it had decades ago and brought back many happy memories. Others may not agree with my choice of bagel (most people get the sesame ones) but the ever present long line in the front confirms we all agree this is the best bagel to be had.
A Montreal original! Superbe bagels and sandwiches.
We stopped at St. Viateur Bagel & Café in Montreal Quebec — the LEGENDARY Montreal bagel spot that everyone talks about! We had fresh wood-fired bagels, right out of the oven, and taste test why Montreal bagels are considered the BEST in Canada. Soft, chewy, lightly sweet, perfectly toasted — there is nothing like it. We can definitely see why they're famous. A must try if you're in Montreal.
The sandwiches are really good. Prepare to pay in cash or interac e-transfer, as they don't accept credit cards.
When I got there, there was quite the line outside! Thankfully it was before the lunch rush so I didn't have to wait longer than 10 minutes. I ordered the steak on an all dressed bagel. It tasted great! Definitely worth the wait.
The OG bagel spot in mtl
Great bagels and super friendly staffs! They really try to keep the line moving for dine-in, and tables get cleaned quickly. Highly recommend Le Joe Bagel. One thing to note though: they only take cash or debit cards.
Good food, great vibe. A little packed, but a great spot for a quick lunch. BLT and iced tea are my new go-to's.
Delicious bagels, I’d recommend ordering the classic salmon bagel! I would definitely go again
The food was amazing and the host was lovely, gave us 4 free bagels for moving seats! Would recommend highly.
After 5 trips to Montreal just buying these amazing bagels for home, we finally sat inside for breakfast. Certainly worth going.
A must-visit for anyone looking to experience Montreal’s iconic bagels. This small, stylish shop is well worth the trip—we enjoyed it so much we went out of our way to visit twice during our stay. The bagels are excellent across the board, but the standout was the toasted rosemary and sea salt with butter—simple and incredibly flavourful. We also tried plain, sesame, and cinnamon raisin, and picked up extras to go. Even dining in felt thoughtful, with small touches like fresh fruit on the side. Expect a lineup, especially before lunchtime, which speaks to its popularity. There’s a separate, faster line if you’re just grabbing bagels to go. Street parking can be limited, so plan accordingly. Located on Mont-Royal Avenue, Montreal, this spot is walking distance from Ojeux—a nice bonus toy shop stop with Jellycats if you’re exploring the area. Overall, a classic Montreal experience—fresh, flavourful, wonderful staff and absolutely worth going out of your way to experience.
The BEST bagels in MTL! Great choice of sweet or savoury options. Very friendly staff. Small little place, so it gets very busy. Well worth the trip or any wait time. Best to go early. If you go closer to closing, (as we did on 2nd visit) they may be out of bagels (except in take out bags), & serving individual sandwiches on regular bread instead. You *want* the bagels! We loved both the cinnamon raisin, toasted, with strawberry cream cheese, & the lovely steak & caramelized onions on a sesame seed bagel. You get cantaloupe slices on the side, which is a nice touch. Very, very filling, & so good you'll want to come back for more!
Managed to sneak in before the rush on a Saturday morning. It’s a busy place, but the staff is super helpful for pointing you in the right direction (one counter is for just bagels, the other is for sandwiches, coffee, etc). The bagels are completely worth the hype, and they make some great breakfast sandwiches too. Worth stopping by!
